Calming a Cat With Acupressure

By Ellen Goodlett

'e Nest
Even the calmest feline may flip his lid
at a change in his environment.
Whether you need to pack Fluffy off to
the vet's office or discard his favorite
shredded sofa, you'll likely be facing
down one angry kitty. Acupressure
techniques can help kitty relax in the
face of stress.

Coax your feline into a relaxed position, on or near your lap. Offer him
treats if he’s hesitant or seclude the two of you in a room where he cannot
hide, such as a bathroom. Or wait for your cat to come to you of his own

volition.

Step 2
Press gently for a few seconds or lightly massage the flat of the cat's
nose, just between her eyes. This movement on the first of four pressure
points, called Yin Tang, is designed to release calming endorphins.

Step 3
Cup your palm around the cat's foreleg and squeeze lightly, drawing your
hand all the way down the leg to the "wrist," where the leg bone meets the
metatarsus or paw bone. Repeat this several times until the cat accepts
your touch.

Step 4
Fold your thumb and forefinger around the cat's wrists, so that your
thumb presses the inside of the wrist, while your index finger presses
against the outside. Apply light pressure here for 30 seconds, or as long
as your cat will accept it. These pressure points are termed by
accupressurists as Heart 7 (right leg) and Pericardium 7 (left leg). You
can work one leg at a time or both together, whichever you and Fluffy
prefer.

Step 5
Run your finger down your cat's spine until you no longer feel the small
vertical bone projections there. This spot, called the Bai Hui acupoint,
should be located about an inch or two above the base of the tail. Gently
rub or scratch here. Your cat may react by lifting his tail in the air.

Step 6
Stroke your cat starting at the jawline beneath the chin with your index
and middle fingers. Slowly pet all the way down to the cat's collarbone
and repeat. This is not an acupoint, but it is a common method of
calming felines, and a good way to end your session.

Always check with your veterinarian before changing your pet’s

diet, medication, or physical activity routines. This information is
not a substitute for a vet’s opinion.

How to Administer Oral Antibiotics to Cats

By Kimberly Caines

Although giving oral antibiotics to your cat companion is often no

picnic, it can mean the difference between a healthy, happy cat and a
sick, unhappy cat. If your method is stressful and leaves you with
scratches and bite marks, reassess it. Your finicky feline will be
grateful.

HOW TO
ADMINISTER
PILLS TO CATS
WITH A PILL GUN

Administering Pills Or Capsules

Step 1
Wrap your kitty in a towel so she resembles a kitty burrito. Cover her front
and back paws but don't cover her head.

Step 2
Put your cat on a waist-high table in a quiet room that doesn't have
access to distracting outdoor views.

Step 3
Place your non-dominant hand over your cat's head so your thumb is on
one side of her cheek and your remaining fingers are on the other side.

Step 4
Squeeze your kitty's cheek with your thumb and middle finger and slowly
pull her head back so her mouth opens up. If she refuses to open her
mouth, hold the capsule or pill between your dominant index finger and
thumb while you gently pry the front of her mouth open and pull her lower
jaw down with the ring finger of the same hand.

Step 5
Place the pill or capsule as far back as you can in your cat's mouth. Work
quickly to avoid getting bitten. Alternatively, use a syringe-like pill gun to
administer the medicine so you don't have to put your fingers in your
cat's mouth. (These are available at many pet stores.) Insert this tool,
which holds the pill or capsule, far back into your cat's mouth and push
the plunger to release the medicine.

Step 6
Close your cat's mouth and rub her neck or blow in her nose to get her to
swallow. Make sure to give her a big hug afterward for good behavior.

Administering Liquids

Step 1
Create a kitty burrito by wrapping your pet companion in a towel that
covers her entire body except her head.

Step 2
Put your cat on a sturdy, waist-high table in a quiet room, away from
distractions and loud noises.

Step 3
Place your non-dominant hand over your kitty's head and position your
thumb on one side of her cheek and your remaining fingers on the other
side. Gently squeeze her cheeks to slightly open her mouth. Avoid tilting
her head back when administering liquids: you don't want them going
down the wrong pipe.

Step 4
Insert the dropper or syringe to the side of your cat's mouth in the pouch
between your kitty's cheek and teeth.

Step 5
Squirt the liquid quickly into the pouch, close your cat's mouth and blow
in her nose or rub her throat to get her to swallow. Praise her afterward.

Always check with your veterinarian before changing your pet’s

diet, medication, or physical activity routines. This information is
not a substitute for a vet’s opinion.
