Concept of Nation

A nation is a community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such
as language, history, ethnicity, culture and/or territory. A nation is thus the collective identity of a
group of people understood as defined by those features.

Some ethnologists and sociologists suggest that nation is an expression of the soul of a people
in other words the basic essence of a group of people. Others suggest the nation is the people.
While others suggest nation emerges from a feeling of belonging. However, many also suggest
that a nation is an imagined political community and lastly, others would suggest that nation
exists when people want self-government.

The four basic requirements for a nation-state are sovereignty, population, territory and
government. In other words, nation-states must rule themselves, have a system of rule, people
and a place to rule over.

According to the video, a nation also is referred to as a type of understanding such as religious
understanding, geographic understandings, spiritual understanding, political understandings,
linguistic understandings, ethnic understanding and cultural understanding.

Experience on the campus

The campus experience is my initial step into finding my future career. Leaving home for the first
time in my life and finding out if I have the skills to make it in the real world. Continuing my
education in hopes of finding a great career and making lots of money for a leisurely lifestyle.
Leaving my home and city for the first time and opening a new chapter in life. Not seeing people
that I’m used to seeing every day and adjusting to a different kind of lifestyle. It is a make it or
break it the moment in life. Adjusting to life on campus wasn’t difficult because there are no
more of those parent rules anymore, Freedom to make all of my own choices without having to
consult anyone anymore. Now I have the freedom to decide to do whatever I want at any time of
my choosing. It’s great and it prepares me for more important decisions making in the future.

Starting the first semester, I was extremely intimidated by campus and was nervous that I would
not be able to do as well in the campus as I did in high school. I figured that the work would be
much more difficult and that the teachers would not be as involved as they were in high school,
which was true; but after the first month or so, I began to really apply myself to my classes and
now I feel like I have definitely adjusted well to the college atmosphere. Even though the whole
“first-semester” experience was not always easy or pleasant, I am very proud of myself to get
through it as well as I did and I am determined to improve next semester. My “first-semester
experience” was a huge wake-up call for me. It made me realize that I can no longer rely on my
teachers or my mother or my friends anymore and that it was time for me to be independent and
handle things on my own. These past couple of months have included some of the most
stressful experiences of my life, but they have made me mature and grow up much quicker than
I ever imagined I would have.
