Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the concepts, principles and laws related to waves, optics and electricity (C2, PLO1)
2. Apply the concepts of waves, optics and electricity in solving numerical problems(C3, PLO1, PLO3,
CTPS3)
3. Analyse the concepts of waves, optics and electricity, scientific skills, scientific attitudes and moral
values in practicals (C4, A5, PLO1, PLO2, PLO3 , CTPS5)
4. Discuss critically the concepts of waves, optics and electricity in our daily life in writings (C5, PLO1,
PLO3, CTPS2)
5. Produce optical or electrical equipments by project base learning using various sources of information
as references and present them (C6, A4, PLO4, PLO6 , CS3, LL2)

This coursework is to assess learning outcomes of courses 3, 4 and 5.

Coursework Objectives:

Students are able to:

1. Analyse the concepts of waves, optics and electricity, scientific skills, scientific attitudes
and moral values while conducting and writing their practical reports.
2. Produce an optical or electrical device or equipment by project based learning using
various sources of information as references.
3. Present a summarized report of the concepts, process and product in producing the optical
or electrical equipment.

JST SCES3073 Ambilan Jun 2019

Many of the scientific concepts concerning waves, optics and electricity are applied in many
devices and equipment in daily life. Practicals allow students to test and validate their
understanding of the concepts learnt in theory. In understanding these concepts, students are at
a position to create and innovate new ideas from these fundamental concepts.

This course requires students to do three tasks, which are; three practicals related to waves,
optics and electrical circuits, produce an optical or electrial device or equipment and to present
the product produced.

Students are required to perform the following tasks:

Task 1: Three Practical Reports (25%)

(Individually)

Plan and conduct the following three practicals:

Practical 1: Determine the fundamental and resonant frequency of a wire in tension.

Discussion question : Uses of harmonics of the fundamental in everyday life.

Practical 2: Determine the wavelength of a laser beam using a diffraction grating and a double
slit.
Discussion question: Discuss the use of lasers in two devices.

Practical 3: Build a circuit to light up a LED at night or during the day.

Discussion question: Discuss the difference between devices that uses AC and DC current as
well as the meaning of voltages, current and power stated in appliances.

Prepare three practical report that contain the following:

● Aim
● Apparatus
● Theory
● Procedure
● Data
● Data analysis and interpretation
● Conclusion
● Discussion
● Suggestion for improvement
● Reference

Task2: Design Project (25%)

(In groups of twos or threes)

Produce an optical or electrical equipment/device that will be useful in daily life.

The product is to be functional and the report on the product should contain the following:
● Background
● Aim
● Function
● Concepts applied
● Building process
● Manual
● Improvement
● Reference

JST SCES3073 Ambilan Jun 2019

Task 3: Presentation of product (10%)
(Individually)

Present product produced. Each member is to have a chance to present part of the
project.

Presentation will be evaluated based on the following:

● Presentation
− Function
− Concepts applied
− Problems faced and solutions
● Communication
● Answering question

Task Execution Command:

1. This assignment is an individual and group assignment.
2. The writing format of the assignment is as follows: -
2.1 The front page must be followed by the latest template.
2.2 Font: Arial
2.3 Font Size: 12
2.4 Skip 1.5
2.5 Reference according to APA format (American Psychological Association).
2.6 Attachments are required
2.7 Writing in English.
3. Plagiarism is prohibited.
4. This assignment carries a total score of 60% and weighted 60%.

Assessment criteria
Tasks will be assessed based on the scoring scheme and scoring rubric.
