Siargao

Siargao Island is pushing toward sustainability with policies like the

ban on single-use plastics, and by acquiring clean and renewable
energy to power the island. Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte has
been known for its pristine white beaches, marine life, rich
mangrove forests—and world-class surfing spots.

Historical Facts
Siargao is a tear-drop shaped island in the Philippine Sea situated
196 kilometers southeast of Tacloban. It has a land area of
approximately 437 square kilometres (169 sq mi). The east coast is relatively straight with one deep inlet, Port Pilar. The
coastline is marked by a succession of reefs, small points and white, sandy beaches. The neighboring islands and islets
have similar landforms.

The first recorded sighting by Europeans of Siargao Island was by Spanish navigator Bernardo de la Torre on board of
the carrack San Juan de Letrán in 1543 when attempting to return from Sarangani to New Spain. It was charted as Isla de
las Palmas (Palm Island in Spanish).[2]
On December 16, 2021, Typhoon Rai struck the area as a Category 5 super typhoon. It left the island devastated, with
many buildings damaged or demolished. It caused ₱20 billion ($400 million) in damages.

Contributions to their Economy

Allowing local communities to boost their Economy

Siargao is an island in the eastern Philippines where the community previously relied largely on coconut plantations and fishing
as a source of income.

Some small-scale resort developers could see the potential of Siargao as a tourist destination because of its beautiful, unspoilt
natural environment and the fact it has the best, most famous surf beach in the Philippines – Cloud Nine.

The  air  service to Siargao has transformed the local economy and fuelled economic growth. Local people on Siargao now have
the option of working in the island’s burgeoning tourism industry, which provides relatively high and more stable income.
