Module 2 Worksheet

Name: ___________________ Section: ________________

Directions: Answer each item. Show your complete solution and make sure you can explain each step of
your answer. Good luck and have fun!

1. A hopeless romantic threw a rock towards the sea from a cliff that is 20.0 m tall. If the rock was
released 30.0° above the horizontal with an initial velocity of 6.0 m/s,
a. What is the maximum height reached by the projectile?
b. Determine its total time of flight.
c. At what horizontal distance from the cliff does it attain its maximum height?
d. How far from the cliff will the rock hit the sea?

2. A flat (unbanked) curve on a highway has a radius of 220 m. A car rounds the curve at a speed of
25 m/s.
a. What is the minimum coefficient of friction that will prevent sliding?
b. Suppose the highway is icy and the coefficient of friction between the tires and
pavement is only one-third of what you found in part (a). What should be the maximum
speed of the car so it can round the curve safely.

3. How fast would a box on a ramp accelerate if the surfaces’ coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.15?
If the box weighs 30 kg and that the ramp is 1.31 m long and inclined at 15 o, how much time is
needed for the box to reach the bottom of the ramp and at what speed will it be moving at that
point?
4. Two masses are connected as shown in the figure. Assuming
that the surfaces are frictionless, determine the 10kg
a. tension on the rope,
b. the acceleration of the masses, and
c. minimum value of the coefficient of static friction
that will prevent the masses from sliding 1kg

5. Tarzan swings from tree to tree in perfect arcs. In one instance, he jumps from a branch carrying
a bunch of bananas for his friends. At the bottom of the arc, he drops the bananas and
continues to swing by grabbing another vine. Determine Tarzan’s speed just after he released
the bananas if the bottom of the arc is 2m below the tree branch and he left the branch at 4m/s.
Tarzan weighs 50 kg while the bunch of bananas weighs 10 kg.

6. In dribbling a ball, a basketball player supplied the ball 5N of force for 45 cm. If the ball’s initial
distance from the ground is 0.9m, at what speed will the ball hit the ground? Assuming that
mechanical energy is conserved, what maximum height will the ball reach on its way up?
Assume further that the ball weighs 1.10 kg.
