TASK 1. Essay (10pts each): Explain or discuss the following statements:

1. Discuss the concept of culture and how it is changing and evolving as it is passed down from generation
to generation.
According to the internet, culture is society’s way of life within anthropology. British literary scholar,
Raymond Williams, defined culture as ordinary. That every society has its own definite way of living and
common understanding which are created by each generation. Hence, culture is always changing.
Also, Edward Burnett Taylor, a British Anthropologist defined culture as a complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs, and any other capabilities which then James Spradley, an
American Anthropologist said that culture is the acquired knowledge people use to interpret experience and
generate behavior.
Culture can be classified into 2 types namely Material Culture and Non-material Culture. Material Culture
refers to the tangible things, resources and spaces that people use to define their culture, while Non-material
Culture is the opposite. Non-material Culture refers to the intangible matters like beliefs, norms, values,
traditions, language and even organization or tribe.
Culture changes over time and this happens when people from rural areas began to migrate to cities or urban
areas or when they began to adapt the popular trends of the society. The Industrial Revolution which took
place in the late 18th Century became the reason of the Popular Culture’s emergence.
Popular culture is the people’s culture that predominates in a society at a point in time. It both reflects and
influence people’s everyday life. These comes from different variety of genre including popular music, cyber
culture, sports, print, entertainment, leisure, fads, advertising and television, wherein, sports and television
are the most widely consumed example of popular culture and they have great staying power. And because
of mass media, the trends in popular culture became much influencing to people. These trends include how
people think, eat, listen, dress, sing, dance, and many more.
Culture changes over time because of the changing interests of society. And because of technological growth,
environmental and social factors affecting people’s lives, popular culture continues to evolve and change from
generation to generation.

2. Explain the relationship of Mass media and Popular and cite one example aside from examples being
discussed.
Mass media is any means of delivering a standardized message to a broader audience, while Popular Culture
is the most widespread cultural pattern in society. Popular culture is transmitted via mass media. The
relationship or the common between mass media and popular culture is that they are both into “influence”.
Anything broadcasted thru media which catch people’s attention or interests leaves a great impact on
people’s life (i.e. personality, way of living, social standards, etc.) and it becomes popular culture. The sources
of mass media had a huge influence on the culture of large groups. For example, a mass media campaign (thru
TV, billboard, etc) could promote a new design and style of clothing that people begin wearing regularly.
3. Explain why sports and television are the two widely consumed examples of popular culture.
Sports and television are the two most widely consumed examples of popular culture which have great
staying power among the other examples of popular culture. Sports are played and watched by members of
all social classes and in most societies, sports represent a major part of many people’s lives. In the popular
culture concept, famous stars and athletes have become icons through mass media.
Televisions became one of the most important things for people. Television is a reflection of culture or social
reality like music and it is a social ritual that we all share. It is produced for mass audiences which makes it
part of popular culture. It transmits cultural values or dominant ideology and is capable of satisfying the
cultural needs of a diverse group of viewers.
