EXERCISING AND DIETING INEFFECTIVE?
Conventional wisdom dictates that exercise plays an important role in weight loss. But a recent
(44.ANALYSE) _______________________ of data shows that the opposite may, in fact, be true.
According to a major study, more than 45 million Americans are supposedly working out on a regular
basis. One may view this as a promising (45. INDICATE) _______________________ of a nation intent
on grabbing the opportunity to adopt a healthy lifestyle, but specialists find little consolation in this. The
reason for their lack of enthusiasm lies in current rates of (46. OBESE) _______________________,
which have dramatically risen, making a third of the American population obese and another third
overweight. At a risk of oversimplifying the issue, it looks as if, instead of alleviating the weight problem
in the US, the prevailing fitness trend seems to have led to an (47. AGGRAVATE)
_______________________ of it. Various studies have been conducted with a view to establishing the
reason for its counter-productive effect. Findings reveal that not only does working out regularly trigger
feelings of hunger, but it also (48. INTENSE) _______________________ our craving for forbidden food
groups, which we eat to reward ourselves for our hard work. So, weight loss is hardly facilitated by
exercise, as calories gained by compensatory eating more than make up for the calories lost during a (49.
VIGOR)_______________ workout. Were it not for its flawed nature, exercising self-discipline would
assist in negating this counter-productive activity. However, self-discipline is, according to psychologists,
like a muscle, which weakens once it has been used. So frequent use of it leads to an inevitable weakening
of resolve. For this reason, if you’re pushing yourself too hard at the gym, and you’ve managed to resist
(50. TEMPT) ______________ once too often, chances are, you’ll soon be reaching out (51. IMPULSE)
________________for that slice of cheesecake.

IX. Read the following passage and do the tasks that follow.

The National Curriculum

According to the United Kingdom government's website.gov.uk, a national curriculum applies so that
primary and secondary school students all receive the same teaching. The curriculum also includes testing,
and guidelines are set out establishing what constitutes an acceptable achievement at each level and in each
subject. These guidelines apply to all state-funded schools. Private schools can set their own curriculum,
and there are certain rules that apply to academies.

The idea of a minimum level of achievement is all well and good so long as there is suitable provision built
in for those who do not make the grade. It is admirable to have targets, and most education is based on a
goal-focused approach. Nevertheless, there will always be those for whom a goal is unattainable. What are
we to do for students who fall short of the expected mark? We have to provide appropriate remedial work
for these students, otherwise they will fail, and the school system will have failed them.

There are multiple reasons why a student might not achieve a satisfactory level. Truancy, illness and
extreme family circumstances play a part. Second-language issues, faced by migrant families for example,
need to be taken into account. A low IQ level or lack of maturity can also be a factor. For there to exist an
average level of intelligence at a certain age, it suggests that some children are above average, while others
are below. Additionally, not every child matures at the same rate, and a child who is not capable of
grasping a concept one year might excel in the subject a year later. We need a system whereby a child aged
eight is not punished or held back due to lack of achievement, otherwise we can rule out that child
flourishing at the age of nine.

It is essential for parents and students to respect the school and what it is trying to achieve, and schools
should work hard to earn that respect. This can only be done with honesty and a positive approach from
teachers. Each student's progress must be carefully monitored, and any serious anomalies should be
promptly addressed in frank and constructive discussion with the parents. A problem brushed under the
carpet in primary school could have lifelong consequences for a child. An ill-thought-out discussion
between teacher and parent can be equally damaging. By default, a good teacher is one who can handle
children well. Training should be extended to ways of dealing with parents and guardians too. We must not
allow the notion to prevail that school is a labor to be endured, which is the logical result if a child and its
parents are constantly receiving what they construe to be complaints and criticism from the school.

The national curriculum provides for a broad range of subjects to be covered. It purports to prepare for
‘spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development’. The remit of the national curriculum covers
the needs of pupils at the school and of society, and supposedly prepares students for the ‘opportunities,
responsibilities and experiences of later life’. The regulatory body, Ofsted, has reported that, in a survey of
pupils, fewer than 5% expressed dissatisfaction with their secondary school. In primary schools, it was less
than 1%. All of this sounds ideal - beyond our wildest imaginings even - and yet it is not the experience of
school shared by many.

Trang 2/4
For schools to improve, and for our children and teenagers to get the education they deserve, these
statistics need to be examined very closely indeed. We need to find out what goes wrong and why people
do not get the best possible experience from education. We also need the people writing the curriculum to
have relevant and recent classroom experience. We simply cannot afford to have our children's future
determined by academics who are divorced from reality. That defies all logic. At the heart of the changes,
however, I would introduce life skills as a compulsory subject. This should include components such as:
study skills, time management, problem solving, organization, communication skills and critical thinking.
In addition to these skills which would benefit the student, you could teach areas that would benefit society
as a whole; cooperation, social responsibility, cultural awareness, respecting diversity, and relationship
education would be obvious ideas to start with. Even better, the next generation of teachers will have been
educated in these vital skills. Then we really will have achieved something to be proud of.
