LEARNING COMPETENCY:

Supplementary Learning Module for Junior High School Learners
Lesson
IDENTIFYING VARIABLES
BEGIN!
After discussing how to formulate hypotheses, we will now take up variables. Variables are important to
understand because they are the units of the information studied and interpreted in research studies. Researchers
carefully analyze and interpret the value (s) of each variable to make sense of how things relate to each other in a
descriptive study or what has happened in an experiment.
In this SLM, you will learn variables specifically the independent, dependent and constant variables.
YOUR TARGETS
1. define variables
2. identify the variables in the research problem
3. differentiate independent, dependent and constant variables from each other
TRY THIS!
Instructions: Choose the best answer to the following test items. Write the letter of your choice on your Research I
notebook.
1. The variable that remains the same throughout the experiment is called –
a. independent variable c. dependent variable
b. constant variable d. all of these
2
3. The responding variables are also called –
a. independent variable c. dependent variable
b. constant variable d. all of these
Congratulations!
Please check your answers at the
answer key question. If you got a perfect
score of 7 you may skip the module but if you
got 6 or lower I suggest that you take the
learning module seriously.
DO THIS!
Instruction: Look at the picture below. State or formulate a problem about the picture.
3
1. What do you call the factors that are studied in this problem ?
2. Can you identify the independent variable in this problem? What is it?
3. What is the dependent variable?
4. What do you think are the factors that you will keep the same or constant throughout the
experiment?
Variables are the factors that are studied in an investigation. The independent variable is the one
that is manipulated or changed. The dependent variable is that which responds to the change. Constant
Only one variable should be manipulated or changed at any one time. The responding variable must
be measured.
LET’S ENGAGE!
Instructions:
Questions:
4
1. What is the independent variable
2. What is the dependent variable?
3. What factors should remain the same throughout the investigation?
EXPLORE!
Instructions: Perform the activity below. Write on your notebook the answers to the questions given.
Objective:. To identify the independent variable, dependent variable and constant variables in the activity.
Problem: Does the height of a hole punched on the side of the can affect how far the water
would spurt from the container when the can is full of water?
NOTE: Ask help from your parents or elders in punching holes on the can.
Materials:
1 pc empty soft drink can or mineral water
1 pc meter stick
1L tap water
modelling clay
Procedure:
1. Get one clean empty soft drink can.
2. Punch three holes of the same size with equal distances from each other, from bottom to top on
one side of the can.
Figure 1
5
3. Cover the holes with modeling clay.
4. Pour water up to the brim of the can.
5. Place a meter stick at the bottom of the can.
Figure 2
6. Remove the clay from the top most hole. Observe what happens. Measure the distance the
water spurt from the can. This is your first trial.
7. Return the clay to the hole and pour water up to the brim again.
8. Repeat step 6 to 7 for the second and third trials.
9. Perform steps 6-8 for the middle and lowest holes.
10. Record your data on the table below.
Table 1. Height of the Holes vs Distance of Water Spurt from the Can
Distance of Water Spurt from the Can
Height of the (cm) Average
Holes (cm) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3
Objective: To identify the independent variable, dependent variable and constant variables in the
activity.
Problem. Does the height where the ball is dropped affect the height of its bounce?
Materials:
1 piece rubber ball (or any kind of ball that bounces)
1 meter stick (or any material that can measure height)
Procedure:
1. Drop the rubber ball at a height of 0.3 meter from the floor.
6
2. Measure the height of bounce of ball using the meter stick.
3. Record the height of bounce for trial 1 on the table below.
4. Perform steps 1 and 2 for trials 2 and 3.
5. Drop the same ball at a height of 0.6 meter from the floor.
6. Repeat steps 2 to 4.
7. Drop the same ball at a height of 0.9 meter from the floor.
8. Perform steps 2 to 4.
Table 1. Height the ball is dropped vs. Height of the ball’s bounce
Variables are the factors that are studied in the investigation. The types of variables are
independent, dependent and constant. Independent variable is the one or anything, condition
influence other variable. Dependent variable is the variable that responds to the change or to the
independent variable. It is also called the effect, or outcome or result variable. Constant variable is
a variable that is NOT allowed to be changed during an experiment. The variable that is expected to

Congratulations for completing the supplementary learning module. You have just had an amazing
journey and for sure you will also do the same in the succeeding modules.
For the last time, share your insights by completing the following sentence prompts.
