Experiment no.

2 – THE BUNSEN BURNER

I. OBJECTIVE:
To study the parts and uses of the Bunsen Burner and the causes and effects of its various flames.

II. MATERIALS:
Bunsen Burner test tube holder
test tube wire gauze
match cardboard

and answer the following :
III. QUESTIONS:
1. What are the parts of the Bunsen burner?
Make a sketch of the Bunsen burner and label and state the use or importance of each of the parts.

2. When the rubber tubing was connected to the gas supply while the air inlets were
closed by screwing the tube and a lighted match was placed above the Bunsen
burner, what is the color of the flame if the air holes/inlets are closed?
-The color of the flame is yellow

What is deposited on the bottom of an evaporating dish if it is exposed above this

flame? -It produces Soot: A black powdery or flaky substance consisting largely of amorphous carbon,
produced by the incomplete burning of organic matter.

What takes place when the air holes are closed?

-The Bunsen burner produces yellow flame when the air holes are closed

3. When the air holes/inlet were opened the air holes, what was the dominant color of
the flame produced?
-The most dominant color produced is blue flame

How many cones are there in the flame? -It has three distinct cones

Are there deposits on the bottom of the evaporating dish if it is exposed to this
flame? - There are no deposits in the evaporating dish's bottom.

What do you call this kind of flame? -Blue flame

What may be some advantages of using this kind of flame?

-Without any unburned or wasted gas, the gas is being burned effectively. With full combustion, you
receive the most heat output from your gas and utilize less gas to generate heat with whichever device
you're using.

4. When the flame of the Bunsen burner was tested with a copper wire, which cone
does the copper wire gets hottest? Indicate the color.
The copper wire being tested in the blue flame is the one that heats up the most.

Why is the blue flame hotter than the yellow flame?

-The blue flame from a Bunsen burner transfers more energy than a yellow Bunsen flame, thus it is hotter.

5. Define the following:

a. Spontaneous combustion- The bursting into flame of a mass of material as a result of chemical
reactions within the substance, without the addition of heat from an external source.
b. Kindling temperature- it is the minimum temperature at which a combustible substance such as air or
gas, must be heated up prior to burning in the absence of any source of the heat.

c. Complete combustion- Complete combustion takes place in the presence of a sufficient amount of
oxygen

d. Luminous flame- A luminous flame is a bright yellow flame that gives light.
IV.CONCLUSION:

Conclusion. If the vents are closed, then the heat of the flame will be lower. If the vents are open, then the
heat of the flame will be higher.
