folates exist in various forms, containing from2 to
10 additional glutamate residues joined to the first
glutamate. The folate/folic acid structure can vary
by reduction of the pteridine moiety to form
dihydrofolate and tetrahydrofolate (THF),
elongation of the glutamate chain, and
substitution of 1-C units at the N5, N10, or both
positions. Folate coenzymes are formed by the
attachment of 1-C units including methyl (CH3),
methylene (eCH2e), methenyl (eCH¼), formyl
(eCH]O), or formimino (eCH]NH) groups to the
polyglutamyl form of the THF molecule.
