vitamin B9,

organic compound

largely used in the treatment of

anemia and
folate deficiencies

Formula and structure

chemical formula: C19H19N7O6 chemical structure
molar mass: 441.40 g mol-1.
The molecule is formed by a long chain of 6
members, which also contains one aryl ring join to
a dihydropteridine ring.
Folate is a B vitamin found in many
foods. The manmade form of folate
is called folic acid.

Folate is also known as folacin and

vitamin B9.

FOLATE AND Folate helps:

the body form healthy red blood

FOLIC ACID
cells
reduce the risk of birth defects
called neural tube defects, such
as spina bifida, in unborn babies

A lack of folate could lead to folate

deficiency anaemia.
GOOD SOURCES OF FOLATE

found in small amounts

breakfast
cereals fortified
with folic acid broccoli Good sources
include:
peas

liver (but avoid

this during leafy green
pregnancy) chickpeas and vegetables
brussels
kidney beans sprouts
FUNCTIONS
Folate is a B vitamin that occurs naturally in foods such
as green leafy vegetables, citrus fruit, and beans.
Folic acid is man-made (synthetic) folate. It is found in
supplements and added to fortified foods.

Folate has many functions in the

body:
Helps tissues grow and cells work
Works with vitamin B12 and vitamin Folate deficiency
C to help the body break down, use, may cause:
and create new proteins Diarrhea
Helps form red blood cells (helps Gray hair
prevent anemia) Mouth ulcers
Helps produce DNA, the building Peptic ulcer
block of the human body, which Poor growth
carries genetic information Swollen tongue (glossitis)
It may also lead to certain types of anemias.
Folic acid is water-soluble. Leftover
amounts of the vitamin leave the body
through the urine. That means your body
does not store folic acid. You need to get
a regular supply of the vitamin through
the foods you eat or through
supplements.
ONE CARBON CARRIER

FOLIC ACID
It is possible to incorporate carbon Folic acid is present as various
units at each of these oxidation forms of THF
states, except methane into other Acts as a co-enzyme by accepting,
organic compounds transferring or modifying one
These single carbon units can be carbon units that are attached to
transferred from carrier compounds N5 or N10 position of folate
such as tetrahydrofolic acid and Active one carbon donors
S-adenosylmethionine to specific Formyl THF - purine synthesis

ONE CARBON
CARRIER
Folic acid : a carrier
of one-carbon units
In one carbon metabolism : Folates act as
coenzymes in the transfer of single-carbon
units.
Necessary for many biosynthetic pathways
such as amino acid and nucleic acid
metabolism.
Active form of folic acid, tetrahydrofolic
(THF), is produced from dihydrofolate
reductase in two step reaction requiring
NADPH.
The carbon unit is carried by THF is bound to
nitrogen N5 or N10 or both.
