ESSAY 1: SLEEP DEPRIVATION: CAUSES AND EFFECTS


In these days, sleep deprivation is a common issue among many people,
especially the youth. Many researches have shown that the average sleep
duration of each individual has shown a dramatic decline nowadays, compared to
the past. The aim of this essay is to illustrate the causes of sleep insufficiency and
its negative impacts on students.
There is an array of reasons why people lack hours of sleep. Firstly, most people
take sleep for granted and do not realize the importance of having enough sleep.
Many believe that instead of wasting their time on bed, they can utilize the
moment to be productive. For instance, many students tend to stay up late to
finish their assignments, create projects or even study with friends. Adults also
spend time working or doing research for the next day of work. Secondly, it is an
inevitable fact that technology also prevents one from taking 8 hours of sleep.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, at least 95% of Americans use some
kind of electronic devices before bed. Therefore, this leads to an insatiable desire,
which will just make people keep scrolling through social media, watching Tik Tok,
or playing video games. Last but not least, due to a hectic and busy day at work or
school, many people may have a lot on their mind and find it difficult to sleep.
Worse, many days of sleeplessness can turn to a habit, and even sleep disorders
such as insomnia.
Sleep deficiency can affect both individuals and other people around.
Undoubtedly, students who stay up late at night is far less efficient than those
who sleep properly. Pupils who lack of sleep usually do not have a good
performance at school, do not concentrate well in class and even make the same
mistakes many times. In addition, sleep deprivation has a negative impact on the
brain, which makes students less intelligent and not able to think clearly.
Therefore, this will badly influence their grades and GPA. Furthermore,
sleeplessness result in fatigue, tiredness and anger. It affects teenagers’ attitude
and behaviors in front of their beloved ones like family, friends and relatives. They
show a tendency to be more picky, annoyed and frustrated when having time
with others. Hence, there are often arguments between students and parents,
thus create distances and misunderstandings.
In conclusion, sleep insufficiency is a serious problem that many people
encounter. Taking sleep for granted, the temptation of technology and stress are
the reasons of sleeplessness. All should be aware of the tremendous harm it
brings and practice going to bed early.
