ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

CLASS VII
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is
also a field of study which tries to make computers "smart". The intelligence demonstrated by
machines is known as Artificial Intelligence. These machines are able to learn with experience
and perform human-like tasks.

HISTORY OF AI

The word "Artificial Intelligence" was first adopted by American Computer scientist John McCarthy,
a young Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College at the Dartmouth Conference.

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

 Reduction in human error

 Available 24×7
 Helps in repetitive work
 Digital assistance
 Faster decisions
 Rational Decision Maker
 Medical applications
 Improves Security
 Efficient Communication

AI in Everyday life

AI is used in different domains to give insights into user behaviour and give recommendations

based on the data. For example, Google’s predictive search algorithm used past user data to

predict what a user would type next in the search bar.

Netflix uses past user data to recommend what movie a user might want to see next, making

the user hooked onto the platform and increase watch time. Facebook uses past data of the

users to automatically give suggestions to tag your friends, based on their facial features in

their images

Here is a list of AI applications that you may use in everyday life:

Online shopping: Artificial intelligence is used in online shopping to provide personalised
recommendations to users, based on their previous searches and purchases.

Digital personal assistants: Smartphones use AI to provide personalised services. AI

assistants can answer questions and help users to organise their daily routines with out a
hassle.

Machine translations: AI-based language translation software provides translations, subtitling

and language detection which can help users to understand other languages.

Cybersecurity: AI systems can help recognise and fight cyberattacks based on recognising
patterns and backtracking the attacks.

Artificial intelligence against Covid-19: In the case of Covid-19, AI has been used in
identifying outbreaks, processing healthcare claims, and tracking the spread of the disease.

E-commerce

 Better recommendations: This is usually the first example that people give when
asked about business applications of AI, and that’s because it’s an area where AI has
delivered great results already. Most large e-commerce players have incorporated
Artificial Intelligence to make product recommendations that users might be
interested in, which has led to considerable increases in their bottom -lines.
 Chatbots : These chatbots are now serving customers in odd-hours and peak hours
as well, removing the bottleneck of limited human resources.
 Filtering spam and fake reviews: Due to the high volume of reviews that sites like
Amazon receive, it would be impossible for human eyes to scan through them to filter
out malicious content. Artificial Intelligence can scan these reviews for suspicious
activities and filter them out, making for a better buyer experience.

DOMAINS OF AI

What are Domains of AI ?

Domains of AI refers to the main Branches of Artificial Intelligence.

There are three domains of AI. They are :

Data

Computer vision

Natural language processing

Data : It is a collection of raw facts which can be processed to make information out of it.
The data can be in the form of numbers, words, symbols or even pictures. The whole Internet is based
on data .

Eg You search for one result on Amazon and you get so many recommendations, a lot of
data is given to these recommendation engines and they analyze your search pattern and
recommend you products according to your likes.

COMPUTER VISION : is identifying the symbols from the given object (pictures) and learn the
pattern and alert or predict the future object using the camera object using the camera.

Eg : Facial recognition, Google lens

Facial recognition
is a technology which is capable of identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video from a
video source. example: it is used by crime investigation agencies
Google lens
To search data, Google uses computer vision for comparing different features of the input image to the
database of images and then give us the result of search.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
The ability of computer to understand human language (command) as spoken or written
and to give a output by processing it, is called Natural Language Processing (NLP)
Some examples of NLP that people use everyday are:
Spell check
Voice text messaging
Related keywords on search engines
Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant

What is Machine learning

It is a subset of Artificial Intelligence which enables machines to improve at tasks with experience (data).
The intention of Machine Learning is to enable machines to learn by themselves using the provided data and
make accurate algorithms for Predictions/ Decisions

What is Deep Learning

Deep learning is a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) that imitates the way humans
gain certain types of knowledge.
Deep learning is an important element of data science, which includes statistics and predictive modeling.

Deep learning utilizes both structured and unstructured data for training.
Practical examples of deep learning are Virtual assistants, vision for driverless cars, money laundering,
face recognition and many more.
