Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Over the last few years, the role of electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) has

increased in the ever-expanding development of our world, and a number of

advancements have been made. Due to the high consumption of electrical devices and its

short life expectancy, electronic waste (e-waste) has become one of the world's fastest

stream-growing wastes. This includes the manufacturing and dumping of numerous

electrical devices that are on demand and are widely used in the 21st century. Examples

include mobile phones, tablets, laptops and power banks. This also includes computers,

lamps, fans, and other household electronic devices that people use in their daily lives.

Since the 1990s, electrical and electronic equipment has revolutionized people’s lives.

These products are ubiquitous in our households, offices, hospitals, transportation

systems and communication networks. They also support development around the globe,

but with ever-increasing technological innovation and rapidly increasing sales, electronic

waste or e-waste has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams. This is a

challenge for waste management, as many electronic products contain both hazardous

and valuable materials (Forti V. et. al., 2018).

E-waste that will not undergo recycling process will mostly dump in landfills and

eventually contributed to soil and air pollution. Moreover, innovator and

environmentalists are planning to reuse and recycle these products in order to reduce the

number of waste electronics produced.

In addition, people can use electronic waste to create accessories and furniture,

such as chairs, tables and lamps, which can greatly help the environment. The use of

electrical materials can produce beautiful and imaginative designs that involve patterns

that people see in a circuit board as well as the use of wires and other sections of a device

or gadget.

As lighting technology has improved, high-power and higher light output diode

such as LED are now being used to replace other lamps. Light-emitting diode lamps use

LED lights (light-emitting diodes) as a light source. Since the light emitted by a separate

diode is small compared to other lamps, such as incandescent and compact fluorescent

lamps, multiple diodes are often used together and are needed to produce a decent

amount of light. Moreover, LED is eco-friendly and does not contain harmful substances

that can seriously damage the environment. According to an article of Shine Retrofits

(2014), Light-emitting diode (LED) is right now the most energy-efficient lighting

technology available for use in commercial and business purposes, and it is only natural

that it is also one of the most rapidly-developing technologies. LED is a kind of solid-

state lighting where a semiconductor converts electricity to light (without producing heat)

usually in a small area of about 1 square millimeter or less (the diode). In an LED lamp,

there are actually multiple light-emitting diodes. The light generated is projected in one

direction, which does away with the need to use diffusers and reflectors.

Unlike most lamps that use fluorescent lights and incandescent lights, LED lamps

are also certified to be recyclable, which could decrease the carbon emissions being
released in the atmosphere. This kind of lighting can also be powered by solar panels to

create lamps that can benefit the environment.

Solar power is a renewable energy that uses the heat of the sun and then turns it

into electricity. Hence, it helps people to get a good amount of energy or electricity while

they are outdoors. According to an article by a solar expert, Kuznia R. (2019), the

benefits of installing solar panels is that it both reduces air and water pollution, it cuts the

need for non-renewable resources, it reduces hazardous waste, and lastly, it also mitigates

climate change. The benefits of using solar panels are that it can be used to reduce the use

of energy coming from fossil fuel and other non-renewable energy. Another benefit is

that it can also have the capability to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Solar

panels are also used to power different electronic products such as cellphone.

According to Gaertner R. (2015), there are 10 essential pros to why solar power is

more practical for households than traditional fossil fuel energy. First, solar energy is

renewable, meaning that no matter what we cannot run out of solar energy as long as the

sun is alive. Second, solar energy is incredibly abundant. Its potential is beyond what we

can imagine. Third, since it is abundant and renewable, solar is also sustainable. Being

sustainable, solar simultaneously meets the needs of the present while not compromising

the needs of the future. Fouth, it is environmentally friendly because it does not cause

pollution. Fifth, it is available everywhere and in any country you could imagine,

especially countries that are closest to the Equator. Sixth, there are significant costs

reduced by the use of solar. Seventh, there are many applications associated with solar

energy. Eight, sharing the ability to use solar energy is possible for everyone. Ninth, solar

energy is not noisy. Lastly, solar power requires little to no maintenance. On the other
hand, the conclusion of the study also shows that even though traditional energy sources

have been popular and abundant for many years, the certainty of supply of fossil fuels

going forward as well as the pollution associated with them raise many concerns

surrounding conventional energy. On the other hand, solar energy is on the rise in

households in the U.S. and around the world, and going forward into the future it serves

as the better alternative to generate power in our homes.

Moreover, according to an article of Solar.com, the average price a person will

pay for electricity through solar in the US varies by state, installer, manufacturer, their

home’s specific installation, and many other factors. For example, in California where the

cost of grid electricity averages about 17.97 cents per kWh, the average price a person will

be paying for electricity with solar is about 7 cents per kilowatt hour.

With these ideas, the research has been able to study the efficacy of solar panel

lamps made from e-waste and LED light. The study also aims to use recyclable materials

to reduce the amount of waste that is dumped in landfills which contribute to pollution.

Moreover, the lamp that will be used in the study is portable and easily carried.
