Executive Summary
Summer hiring slump. Nationwide job openings continued to decline for the second consecutive month, dropping -3.8% from May. Openings were up 21.9% year-over-year from 2010. The decline in job openings signifies that employers are less confident in the economy right now, said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. Hiring is likely to be slower as we ride out the effects of events abroad, but we should see a natural increase again at the end of summer when fall hiring begins. Hiring slows further in major metros. Additional metros experienced declines in job openings in June. Forty-six of 50 metros posted losses, 14 more than the previous month. The four metros that did not lose job openings saw insubstantial growth: Louisville (1.7%), Birmingham (1.4%), Detroit (0.1%) and Pittsburgh (0.0%). Retail and finance remain most secure. Despite employer uncertainty of future consumer spending, retail salespersons continued to have the most job openings of any occupation category, up 62.8% month-over-month. Similarly, openings for finance and accounting specialists were up 27.7% for the month, indicating that job seekers may have more luck in either of these fields.

Employment Impact: World Economy

Decrease in manufacturing jobs. Hiring in the manufacturing industry dropped for the first time in six months, down -7.7%. Job openings for manufacturing workers were also down, -3.6%. Reduced hiring in the industry is likely the result of insecurity about consumer spending trends, as the European Unions debt troubles and other financial issues in Japan and China shake the world economy. Automotive industry slows again. Since the earthquake crisis in Japan, automotive hiring has declined (-2.8% in May, -5.6% in June). The industry was previously on the mend, with major US manufacturers hiring for the first time in years; following the earthquakes, however, automotive production all but ceased due to parts shortages. Hiring is expected to increase again near the end of the year, as Japan slowly rebuilds.

Local Market Outlook

HIGHLIGHTS
Job competition shakeup. Decreasing job openings resulted in nine metros becoming more competitive (Miami & Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, New York, Memphis, Greenville, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Raleigh & Durham), and five other metros becoming better for job seekers (West Palm Beach, Pittsburgh, Portland, Phoenix, Sacramento). Hiring slows in Texas. The three greatest decreases in job openings for the month were in Texas: Austin (-22.3%), San Antonio (-8.6%), Dallas & Fort Worth (-8.0%). These declines indicate that hiring is slowing in a state that has contributed one-third of the nations post-recession jobs.

Industry and Occupation Outlook

HIGHLIGHTS
Confidence in transportation grows. Energy prices have not risen to the extreme rates feared by analysts, renewing confidence in the transportation industry. While most other industries had negative changes in job openings, transportation continued to increase, up another 19.1% (12.9% last month). This hiring increase is likely to continue if oil prices remain level. Increased military hiring. The military was one of two sectors experiencing job growth in June, increasing 7.2%. Job openings for military personnel increased 41.5%, the second largest growth of any occupation category after retail salespersons.

More jobs in non-consumer companies. Of 92 unique employers on the Top Hiring Companies list, only 27 were companies whose primary business is consumer goods and services. More than two-thirds of the top employers are in health, financial or commercial services. Companies cutting back on hiring. Seventy-three of 125 company locations decreased their number of job openings in June. While these declines may be due in part to positions becoming filled, the more likely primary cause is the general hiring slump across the nation.
