BIOGRAPHY (Biografia):
Edgar Alan Poe was born in 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. He was the second
of three children. David and Elizabeth, his parents, were actors. His father abandoned the family in
1810, and his mother died the following year. He was an orphan at the age of three. He attended the
university of Virginia. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army. Following his Army service, Poe
was admitted to the United States Military Academy of West Point, but he was again forced to leave
for lack of financial support.
From 1831 to 1835, Edgar Allan Poe
lived in Baltimore, where his father was
born, with his aunt Maria Clemm and
her daughter, his cousin Virginia. He
began to devote his attention to his
cousin and in 1836, they got married.
She was only 13 years old In 1847, at
the age of 24 —— Virginia passed
away from tuberculosis. Poe was
overcome by grief following her death.
He continued to work, suffering from
poor health and struggling with financial
problems. He was an American writer, poet, critic and editor best known for evocative short stories
and Virginia, who became his literary inspiration as poems that captured the imagination and interest
of readers around the world. He died in 1849. Poe’s work as an editor, a poet, and a critic had a
profound impact on American and international literature. His stories mark him as one of the
originators of both horror and detective fiction. Many anthologies credit him as the “architect” of the
modern short story.
