LESSON PLAN
TOPIC:
GRADE LEVEL: Grade 9
TIME ALLOTMENT: 1hr
LEARNING COMPETENCY: Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt.
OBJECTIVES: Discuss how viscosity of the lava may affect the shape of a volcano
ELLICIT
Ask the students, how volcanoes are classified? The students would answer “active and
inactive” based on the previous lesson.
ENGAGE
Tell the students that volcanoes can also be classified as Cinder Cone, Shield, and Composite
volcano. Show them pictures of the three then ask them; How do you think the volcanoes
shown in the pictures differ? What do think affects their structure?
EXPLORE
Viscosity Race
Objectives:
determine the viscosity of some liquids; and
describe the flow of gas in different liquids
Materials:
four pieces of cone out of a cardboard clear drinking glass beaker drinking straw tray
timer water syrup honey cooking oil
Procedure:
1. Before doing the activity, predict which liquid (water, syrup, honey, and cooking oil) takes the
least amount of time to reach the tray. Which liquid will take the most amount of time?
2. Place the cone marked A, B, C, and D on the tray.
3. Pour water on the top of cone A. Record the time it takes for the water to reach the tray.
4. Do it three times for each material. NOTE: Use the same amount of material each time.
ELABORATE
When the lava that a volcano produce is less viscous, it runs far and thin thus a shield
volcano is formed. On the other hand, when the lava is too viscous, it creates steeper slope like
in composite and cinder cone volcano.

EXTEND
Mt. Mauna Loa in Hawaii is a shield volcano while Mt. Mayon in the Philippines and Mt.
Fuji in Japan are examples of composite volcanoes.
EVALUATE
Short Quiz
1. This refers to the ability of fluid to flow.
2. What are the 3 types of volcano based on its structure?
3. (T or F) Lava with high viscosity produces volcanoes with low slope like shield
volcanoes.
4. (T or F) Mt. Mayon is a shield volcano.
5. (T or F) Mt. Taal is a cinder cone volcano.
