Introduction paragraph
Introductory paragraphs are important because
they are the first thing that either grabs the
attention of the reader or turns them off.
Introductory paragraphs have several components
including creative titles, hooks, connecting
thoughts, background information and a thesis
statement.

Hook

When writing an essay, the hook is a connection to

the real word that gets the readers interested in
reading the rest of the essay. Essay hooks can
either tell or recount a story, give an interesting
statistic, provide a relevant quote or give a real
world connection. When writing an essay hook, it's
important to use definitions sparingly and to
weave quotations in to interest the reader.

What is the difference between successful college students and unsuccessful college students?  
2.  The Strong Statement/Declaration Hook
Online college classes are cheaper and more effective than in-person college classes.    
 
3.  The Fact/ Statistic Hook
Almost two-thirds of American adults at some point in their life lived in a home with at least one gun.  
 
4.  The Metaphor / Simile Hook
Writing a research paper is like running a marathon when it’s 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
 
5. The Story Hook
I got off the train and pulled my luggage behind me.  A cab pulled up to the curb, and the driver got out. 
He lifted my luggage and said, “Miss, I’m just going to put your stuff in the boot.”   I didn’t know what he
meant until I saw him open the car’s trunk.  Then I realized the boot means car trunk.  I got in the cab,
wondering how many other words would be different in England.  
6.  The Description Hook
The dog howled in pain and limped along the side of the road.  His leg was cut and blood streamed
down his leg.  
7.  The Quotation Hook
Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

Essay Thesis
When writing a paper, a thesis statement is one of
the most important parts of the essay. Thesis
statements can be considered as road maps for
essays - it tells the reader where the essay is
headed and keeps the writer on track. Thesis
statements much be able to be proven and
expressed in 1 - 2 sentences.

Body paragraphs
are considered the crux of an
essay. In body paragraphs, there are several
important parts. First, body paragraphs include
topic sentences, supporting information, evidence
and analysis.

Supporting evidence
proves a claim to be true.
Supporting evidence can be a summary,
paraphrased or a direct quote. Supporting
evidence is a crucial part in body paragraphs and it
is important to be discerning in the evidence
chosen.

Conclusion
When writing conclusion paragraphs, it is
important to remember a few important things.
First, a conclusion paragraph should return to the
hook. Next, an effective conclusion paragraph
should restate your thesis. Finally, a concluding
paragraph should try to relate to the reader when
applicable.
