Limit rules

Theorem (Limit Rules)

Let n be a positive integer, k a real number, f and g functions
such that limx→c f (x) and limx→c g(x) both exist. Then
1. limx→c k = k
2. limx→c x = c
3. limx→c kf (x) = k limx→c f (x)

4. limx→c f (x) + g(x) = limx→c f (x) + limx→c g(x)

5. limx→c f (x)g(x) = limx→c f (x) limx→c g(x)
f (x)
6. limx→c = lim
g(x)
x→c f (x)
limx→c g(x) , provided limx→c g(x) 6= 0
 1 1
7. limx→c f (x) n = limx→c f (x) n , provided
limx→c f (x) > 0 when n is even.

Theorem
Suppose that f (x) = g(x) for all x in some open interval
containing c, but possibly excluding c. If limx→c g(x) exists then

Theorem (Squeeze Theorem)
Let f , g and h be functions such that f (x) ≤ g(x) ≤ h(x) for all x
near c, except possibly at c. If limx→c f (x) = limx→c h(x) = l
then limx→c g(x) = l.

Limits at ∞
Definition
Let f be defined on some interval [a, ∞). We say that
limx→∞ f (x) = l if for all > 0 there exists a number M such that

x > M ⇒ |f (x) − l| <

y = f (x)

13 / 26
Limits at ∞

All the results for limits at a finite number c which we have

discussed earlier (limit rules, “Squeeze Theorem”, etc.) apply to
limits at ±∞.

Example
Find

Sequences

A sequence of real numbers is a function of the form

f :N→R
n 7→ f (n)

Usually we write an (or we can use any other letter in place of a)

instead of f (n) to denote the nth element of the sequence. The
entire sequence may be denoted as (an )n≥1 or an , n ≥ 1.

16 / 26
Sequences
Definition
Let an , n ≥ 1 be a sequence. We say that limn→∞ an = l if for
each > 0 there exists N ∈ N such that

n > N ⇒ |an − l| <

Infinite limits

19 / 26
Infinite limits

Infinite limits

Warning:
There are various limit rules for infinite limits which we can derive
from the definition although we have to be a little bit careful. For
example,
I If lim f (x) = ∞ and lim g(x) = ∞ then

lim f (x) + g(x) = ∞. However, we cannot say anything
about the limiting behaviour of f (x) − g(x) in general.

I If lim f (x) = ∞ and lim g(x) = ∞ then lim f (x)g(x) = ∞.
However, we cannot say anything about the limiting behaviour
of fg(x)
(x)
in general.

I If lim f (x) = ∞ then lim f (x) = 0. However, if lim f (x) = 0,

in general.

23 / 26
Infinite limits

We say that the line x = c is a vertical asymptote of the graph of

y = f (x) if any of the following is true:

lim f (x) = ∞, lim f (x) = −∞, lim f (x) = ∞, lim f (x) = −∞

x→c+ x→c+ x→c− x→c−

24 / 26
Infinite limits

We say that the line y = b is a horizontal asymptote of the graph

of y = f (x) if

lim f (x) = b or lim f (x) = b
