RIZAL IN ATENEO (1872-1877)

June 10, 1872- Rizal took the entrance exam for

Ateneo in San Juan de Letran with Paciano

Despite passing the entrance exam, Father Margin Ferrand, who was then
college registrar of Ateneo, did not allow Rizal to be enrolled for two reasons:

1.) He was a late enrollee

2.) He looked thin and underdeveloped

Manuel Burgos helped Rizal get in and proceed with his enrollment.

RIZAL IN UST
RIZAL IN UST (1877-1882)

Rizal studied Philosophy and Letters during his first year in UST.
He then shifted to Medicine and specialized in Ophthalmology in
his second year.
RIZAL IN UST (1877-1882)

His academic performance declined in contrast to his time in Ateneo

primarily due to his pursuit of other activities (i.e. activism and dating) as
well as that of certain structural reasons.

Three structural reasons associated to this decline:

1)The attitude of Dominican professors towards Rizal
1)There was racial discrimination against Filipino students
2)The methods of teaching were primitive and repressive

In 1880, Rizal founded a secret society of Filipino students in University of

Santo Tomas named Compañerismo (Comradeship), with the help of his
cousin Galicano Apacible, the secretary of the said group. Members of
the said group were called Companions of Jehu. Rizal became the front-
runner during brawls and often exchanged insults with the Spanish
mestizos.

•Kastila or bangus-insult that refers to the Spanish mestizos

•Indio or Chongo- insult that refers to the Filipinos

Rizal also experienced brutality in the hands of Spanish officials, which

most probably have further fueled his activism against the oppressive
systems.
LIBERALISM AND LITERARY WORKS
AS A THOMASIAN

It was at the point of Rizal’s stay in UST when the rise of liberalism among
the students in Manila became prevalent. This school of thought has
influenced Rizal so much that he joined contests to prove that the Filipinos
can be equal and even surpass the Spaniards in literary prowess.

recognized as the best entry in the literary writing competitions hosted
