UPLIFTING THE RURAL COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING KONKAN

EXPERIENCE TO TOURIST AT VENGURLA

INTRODUCTION:

India is diversified in various natural, cultural, and occupational aspects due to

variations in its topography. However, from the time civilizations have been known,

Agriculture and Farmers have been the backbone of the Indian economy. A recent

survey indicates that over 70 percent of rural households depend on agriculture.

Agriculture is an important sector of the Indian economy as it contributes about 17%

to the total GDP and provides employment to over 60% of the population.

Due to increasing input costs, decreased yields, and poor agriculture commodity

prices there is a decline in agricultural income and profit. Such increasing problems

in the agriculture sector in India are creating a negative attitude among the farmers

regarding agriculture. Hence there is an extreme need to create an additional source

of income using existing agricultural land and agricultural occupation. Many

farmers, in addition to normal farming activity, have already turned to Agritourism

as a source of additional farm income. Agritourism is a form of agricultural multi-

functionality that allows tourists to experience real and authentic contact with the

village life, taste the local food and get familiar with the many farming tasks during

the visit. There are numerous benefits of agritourism: it may strengthen the local

economy and create job opportunities and new businesses.

Maharashtra is the third large state in India which is culturally and geographically

very diverse. Within this lies the Konkan region which is gifted with the beautiful

seashore, mountains, and scenic natural beauty and is rich in the vegetation of

varied varieties and natural resources. In this region, Sindhudurg District is the first

district to be declared a tourism district in the year 1997. As it has a great potential

for attracting foreign tourists. The population over here is largely dependent on

farming and fishing and thus the perfect identification, proper planning, and timely

utilization of these resources will help to improve the rural economy.

Hence Sindhudurg has a good opportunity to diversify its economy via the

interjection into the agriculture business and Agritourism to increase the

sustainability of farming by offering value products and services to the tourists.

CHAPTER 4: AGRITOURISM:
Upliftment of Vengurla through Agrotourism
Design Dissertations: 2022-2023

INTRODUCTION:

Agriculture is the backbone of India, and a great percentage of our economy

depends on the agriculture sector. Agri-tourism is the latest trend that is gaining

popularity in the country. In this world of pandemic and climate change, people are

now more eager towards finding their roots and going back to the nature. That's

why farm stays or Agritourism are now flourishing in India. These places offer

authentic village and farm life experiences by providing interactive activities of rural

life. Fresh air is all we seek today in this polluted world, and these are places where

we can repair our lungs!

What is Agri-tourism?

1 World Tourism Organization (1998) defines Agri-tourism as “it involves

accommodation being offered in the farmhouse or in a separate guesthouse,

providing meals and organizing guests’ activities in the observation and

participation in the farming operations.”

2 Agri-tourism refers to people visiting working farms or other agricultural

operations for the purpose of enjoyment, education, or other active involvement.

3 Agri-tourism encompasses a wide variety of activities and provides a means for

farmers to diversify and supplement their income. Such activities may include

wildlife study, horseback riding, cannery tours, cooking classes, wine tasting,

harvest festivals, barn dances, farm stays, guided tours, and petting zoos.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORKS

Social scientists and economists have studied agritourism and economic

development for Phillip, et al. offer the following typology for agritourism based on

a review of literature

Upliftment of Vengurla through Agrotourism

Design Dissertations: 2022-2023

More recent scholarship offers the following conceptual framework for

understanding agritourism as a set of five types of activities: education,

entertainment, direct sales, outdoor activity, and hospitality (Chase, Stewart,

Schilling, Smith, & Walk, 2018). Within each type are core and peripheral activities

according to depth of connection to agriculture. Core activities include those that

take place on a working farm and have a direct link to the primary agricultural

activity at that site. Peripheral activities include general outdoor experiences like

hiking and community events that happen to take place on a farm, as well as off-

working-farm activities with a general link to agriculture, such as an agricultural

living history museum.

CHAPTER 5

AGROTOURISM AS A COLLECTIVE EFFORT

What is a Collective Farming?

Collective farming and communal farming are various types of, "agricultural

production in which multiple farmers run their holdings as a joint enterprise".

Collective farming encourages the members to be more productive by allowing them

to maximize their potential. It is a working community that encourages people to

share skills and labour, which results in a smoothly operating establishment. This is

because a collective farm’s entire mechanism is based on cooperation and

participation. This model allows the members to develop their own professional

growth in terms of knowledge, skills, and ability.

DESIGN-

• The resort is designed to take advantage of its tropical climate by maximizing

opportunities for daylighting and natural ventilation.
• The suites with large openings are oriented towards the north-west facing
Gangapur dam allowing to capture beautiful water view beyond the soothing
expanse of the vineyard.
• This also allows natural light to penetrate the entire space eliminating the
need for artificial lighting during the day. Heating and cooling loads are
reduced using deep overhangs.
• The landscape has been proposed to minimize the impact on the
environment. It is in symphony with the existing surrounds as it moves
around the site non-interrupting the natural contours.
• The design philosophy clearly leans towards providing an experience of
rejuvenation and oneness with nature, rather than the typically expected
forms of ostentatious luxury.
• Vineyards have always been integral to Nashik’s identity. The lush green
plantations provide a visual treat to the visitors and locals alike. However,
living in the middle of a vineyard and experiencing it at close quarters is a
unique experience.

INTRODUCTION:

A stay at Forganic Farm is the best escape from Mumbai and Pune. The feeling of

living in a heavenly land full of farms, forests and natural water bodies is

extravagant. With organic activities on the farm, such as the river trail, fishing,

farming and much more, you can be sure that visitors will have the best time.

Living in cities and following a routine leaves us completely trained and

disconnected from nature. Hence, the aim of Forganic Farm is therefore to reconnect

tourists with Mother Nature and give them the space to live in her arms.

CONCEPT:

• Organic farming has very quickly caught up with the health-conscious urban

dwellers in the city. However, organic farming itself is often not an

economically sustainable model. Moreover, if the site is in the Western Ghats,

an ecologically important area, it becomes morally and economically

demanding.

• This project tried to bridge the gap between ecology and agriculture while

trying to preserve the ethos of the place.

CONCLUSION:

In this thesis we established that the economy of Vengurla is drastically dependent

on agriculture. Due to increasing input costs, decreased yields, and poor agriculture

commodity prices there is a decline in agricultural income and profit. Such

increasing problems in the agriculture sector are creating a negative attitude among

the farmers. The future generation is moving towards metro cities to find new

employment opportunities. To prevent this migration and develop rural economy,

resources must be created, which can be done through ‘Agritourism’.

Agritourism can transform the economic aspects of traditional agriculture. Which

will bring many direct and indirect benefits to farmers and villagers. It can create

employment opportunities for farmers, including families and youth on farms.

Farmers can improve their standard of living through contact with city dwellers.

Also it can support rural development and agricultural processes.

As Vengurla has natural beauty, old culture, and heritage, also agriculture is the

main occupation, so it becomes great location for agritourism. Hence, Agritourim as

platform can help in uplifting the economy of Vengurla.

THESIS STATEMENT:

Through Agritourism as a platform, tourist in Vengurla can have authentic rural

experience and Farmer’s market will give farmers the required opportunity to sell

their organic farm produce directly to tourists which will help in economic growth.
