Brazil mourns the loss of Chorão

The leader of the band Charlie Brown Jr. was found dead in his apartment in São
Paulo, on March 6
In the late 1990s Brazilian rock music
was in trouble. In just seven years - from
1989 to 1996 - Brazil had lost three major
rock idols: Raul Seixas, Cazuza, and Renato
Russo. In 1997, however, a new band
stepped into the spotlight that was the year
Charlie Brown Jr. released their first album,
mixing rock with hip hop. The leader was the
lyricist and vocalist, Chorão. Charlie Brown
Jr. released nine albums of original work,
selling over 5 million copies. One of their
biggest hits was “Te Levar”, the theme tune
for the show Malhação from 1999 to 2006.
Chorão became one of the biggest rock
stars in Brazil. His lyrics spoke about the
main dilemmas faced by young people. But
on March 6 the dream ended for millions of
fans. The singer was found dead, alone, in
his apartment in São Paulo. Relatives said
that Chorão had been depressed since his
marriage had ended. The police are
investigating the cause of death, with one
possibility being that he was killed by a drugs
overdose.
Alexandre Magno Abrão was born in São Paulo on
April 9, 1970. His parents separated when he was just
11 years old. He came from a low-income5 background,
with his mother working as a domestic cleaner. Chorão
moved to Santos when he was a teenager. He loved
skateboarding, which he continued even after becoming
a rock star. On stage, you could see the injuries on his
hands and legs that he had suffered when
skateboarding.
