Rodrigo Roa Duterte

My evaluation on the quality of advocacies and campaigns in our country, province, or city is that they
show great impact towards its audience, focusing more on problems that the speaker and its audience
both shares. In line with this, our president, Rodrigo Duterte, spoke out about the problem regarding
drug addiction in the Philippines and he said, quote unquote, “It should be something like you would
also do a campaign all around the Philippines warning the citizens about being killed, about being
slaughtered if they do drugs.” Generally speaking, he is implying here, that illegal drugs are not an
appropriate substance for you to consume, as it not only negatively affects your physical and mental
health, but it also affects your outlook in life the more you get addicted to the illegal substance.
Additionally, in President Rodrigo Duterte’s first year of his government, he made explicit calls to the
police to search, find, and exterminate people who were accused of being drug users and dealers. My
thoughts about this is that President Rodrigo Duterte could’ve handled this in a more passive manner by
simply ordering the police to apprehend the accused drug dealers and users instead of just killing them
in sight. However, the reason for the killings is not only because of moral rights, but because the police
would be greatly rewarded for every kill they get, ranging from 10,000PHP up to 1 million pesos,
depending on the classes of drug addicts.

In relation to the characteristics of an advocacy campaign, this advocacy of President Rodrigo Duterte
shows the characteristic of “Playing to what is there.” The reason is that, judging from the structure of
President Duterte’s statement, he is more or less responding to a particular question regarding drug
addiction. Another characteristic is “Aligned Climate,” as you can see from President Duterte’s
statement, he stated the word “killed,” which showed a negative connotation in relation to the sentence
the word is being used from. Ultimately, the last characteristic present on President Rodrigo Duterte’s
advocacy is “Target Opinion Leaders,” simply because he was relating to the human rights advocates.

Duterte is highly encouraging all of the Filipinos to refrain from intaking illegal drugs. In addition, in the
first year of President Rodrigo Duterte's inauguration, President Rodrigo Duterte specifically urged
police to search, find and eradicate those accused of being drug users and dealers. In my opinion,
President Rodrigo Duterte could have dealt with this more passively by simply ordering the police to
detain the suspects, rather than killing them. However, the motive for the killings is not only because of
moral rights, but because the police would be greatly compensated for every death they collect, ranging
from 10,000PHP up to 1 million pesos, depending on the classifications of drug addicts.
