Experiment 1

Study of Digital Storage Oscilloscope

Department of Electrical Engineering,

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

ELL100 Laboratory 1
Motivation

•  The Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO) is used for

measurement and analysis of waveforms and other phenomena
in electrical and electronic circuits

•  An oscilloscope automatically displays the instantaneous

amplitude of an a. c. voltage waveform versus time

•  It can also present other time varying quantities with the help of
“transducers” which convert current, pressure, strain,
acceleration, temperature etc. into voltages

ELL100 Laboratory 2
Objectives

•  To become familiar with the operation and adjustment of controls on

the front panel of a DSO
•  To use the DSO for visual display of electrical signals
•  To make frequency measurement by means of Lissajous patterns
•  To measure the phase difference between two signals of the same
frequency
•  To learn how to measure the period and frequency of a periodic
waveform

ELL100 Laboratory 3
Changing the Horizontal Time Base

•  To change the horizontal time base (Y-T, X-Y, or Roll) do the

following:
–  1. Press [Horiz].
–  2. In the Horizontal menu, press Time Base.
–  3. Continue pressing the Time Base softkey or turn the entry
knob to
Y-T Amplitude vs. time. This is the typical horizontal time
base setting.
X-Y Channel 2 (X- axis) vs. Channel 1 (Y- axis)

ELL100 Laboratory 4
AUTOSCALE Function

•  This button may be thought of as the ‘panic’ button

•  This button may be pressed when you think that you
are lost and need help (with regard to displaying the
signals on the DSO properly!)
•  Once the AUTOSCALE button is pressed, the DSO
measures the amplitudes and time periods of the input
signals connected to CH-1 and CH -2 and
automatically chooses the correct Volts/Div, Time/Div,
and Trigger mode settings

ELL100 Laboratory 5
Equipment Required

•  Digital Storage oscilloscope

•  DC power supply 0-30v
•  Function generator 0 to 3 MHz
•  Resistors and capacitors

ELL100 Laboratory 6
Frequency Measurement

•  Frequency of an unknown sine wave signal Fx is measured using

an accurately calibrated sine wave generator as reference
•  The unknown frequency signal is applied to the vertical terminal of
DSO and the standard signal to the horizontal amplifier
•  The horizontal time-base mode is set to XY mode. The standard
frequency is adjusted manually until the circle or ellipse pattern
appears, indicating that both signals are at the same frequency
•  Where it is not possible to adjust the standard signal frequency to
the exact frequency of the unknown signal, the standard is
adjusted until a stable Lissajous pattern appears on the screen
•  Several Lissajous patterns are to be observed

ELL100 Laboratory 7
Conclusion
•  You must:

–  Create voltage, frequency and phase Measurement tables

–  To unlock your report submission, waveforms and patterns

obtained on DSO should be shown to the TA at the time of
experiment

–  Final report must contain purpose, theory, setup, results, and

conclusion
