WHAT IS OSCILLOSCOPE ?

• An oscilloscope is a laboratory instrument commonly used to display and

analyze the waveform of electronic signals. In effect, the device draws a
graph of the instantaneous signal voltage as a function of time.
WHO INVENTED OSCILLOSCOPE
?

André-Eugène Blondel (28 August 1863 – 15

November 1938) was a French engineer and physicist.
He is the inventor of the electromechanical
oscillograph and a system of photometric units of
measurement.
DIGITAL OSCILLOSCOPES

• Digital oscilloscopes are available in many types. Two key factors

determine the performance of a digital oscilloscope: sampling rate and
bandwidth. An oscilloscope's sampling rate limits its ability to capture
transient, one-time events. The bandwidth of an oscilloscope limits the
frequency of repetitive signals that can be displayed.
DIGITAL OSCILLOSCOPE
THE THREE SYSTEMS
• A basic oscilloscope consists of three different systems – the vertical system, horizontal
system, and trigger system. Each system contributes to the oscilloscope’s ability to
accurately reconstruct a signal.
When using an oscilloscope, you adjust settings in these areas to accommodate an incoming
signal:
• Vertical: This is the attenuation or amplification of the signal. Use the volts/div control to
adjust the amplitude of the signal to the desired measurement range.
• Horizontal: This is the time base. Use the sec/div control to set the amount of time per
division represented horizontally across the screen.
• Trigger: This is the triggering of the oscilloscope. Use the trigger level to stabilize a
repeating signal, or to trigger on a single event.
ADVANTAGE AND
DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGE

• One of the advantages of an oscilloscope over multimeter is that

oscilloscopes also have the ability to visually display complex signals (the
"picture" part in the adage), able to show a transient signal that may pose a
threat to a system can be displayed, measured, and isolated with an
oscilloscope.
DISADVANTAGE

• One disadvantage is that oscilloscopes cost many times more than other
types of electronic measuring instruments, such as multimeters. They are
also very sophisticated, and tend to be costly to repair if damaged.
WHY IS AN OSCILLOSCOPE USEFUL?

It allows unprecedented view of voltage vs. time for one or more

synchronized channels. The view can be exceedingly fast or exceedingly
slow the plots vs. times of nanoseconds to hours. Without the oscilloscope it
would be hard to get an accurate view of what's happening in that time span.
DOES OSCILLOSCOPE MEASURE POWER?
• Depending on the waveform math capabilities of the oscilloscope, these measurements
can include instantaneous power, true power, apparent power, and phase. There are two
primary types of current probes for oscilloscopes: AC current probes.
HOW TO MEASURE CURRENT WITH AN
OSCILLOSCOPE?
• Current flow through a conductor causes an electromagnetic flux field to form around the
conductor. Current probes are designed to sense the strength of this field and convert it to
a corresponding voltage for measurement by an oscilloscope. This allows you to view and
analyze current waveforms with an oscilloscope.
HOW DOES AN OSCILLOSCOPE
MEASURE VOLTAGE IN A CIRCUIT?

The most basic method of taking voltage measurements is
to count the number of divisions a waveform spans on the
oscilloscope's vertical scale. Adjusting the signal to cover
most of the display vertically makes for the best voltage
measurements, as shown.
