CA
What’s In

LA
It is very important to distinguish simple past tense and past participle
before you begin identifying active and passive sentences.

BU
A Past Participle indicates a completed action.

For regular verbs, the past participle is the same as the past tense and

OF
is created by adding –d, -ed or –ied at the end of the word. However, the past
participle of irregular verbs does not end in –d, -ed or –ied and may not be the
same as the past tense. Since they are irregular, they do not follow any pattern
and the best way to learn them would be to repeat and memorize them. It can
ON
be used to form a verb phrase, which requires auxiliary verbs.

Examples:
ISI

Verb Simple Past Past Participle

help helped helped
weep wept wept
IV

work worked worked

SD

Though they may seem similar, there is a difference between regular

past tense and past participle. The regular past has only one part while the past
participle always has two or more parts, and as noted, generally requires an
auxiliary verb. An example of a sentence with a regular verb (using one of the
OL

above sentences) would be: "I helped my friend in doing her projects." You
simply helped your friend at some time in the past, but you might continue to
help her at some point in the future.
HO

The same sentence with a past participle verb would be: "I have helped
my friend in doing her projects." You began helping your friend in the past and
completed the action of helping her in the past.
SC

4
Here are some of the most common irregular verbs with their simple
past and past participle forms.

N

write wrote written
feel felt felt
bite bit bitten

LA
catch caught caught
draw drew drawn
drive drove driven

BU
eat ate eaten
fall fell fallen
swear swore sworn
swim swam swum

OF
Let us read the following sentences below. On the space provided before
the number, write Past tense, if the underlined verb used is in past tense and
Past participle if it is in past participle.
ON
__________1. The construction workers have built that school building.
__________2. The singer sang a nice song in the concert.
__________3. The caterpillar has eaten a lot of leaves from the trees.
ISI

__________4. The fisherman has just caught a big fish.

__________5. The kids wrote a letter for their parents.
IV

What is your answer in number 1? How about in number 3 and 4?

You are absolutely right if you answered past participle in item numbers
SD

1, 3, and 4. The underlined verbs used in those sentences describe events

occurring in the past that are linked to a later time, usually the present.

On the other hand, in item numbers 2 and 5, the underlined verbs are
OL

example of simple past tense or an action that was made at some time in the
past.
HO

Learning past tense and past participle of the verb will guide you in
making clear statements in different situations be it oral or written that already
happened in the past.

CA
Bayanihan: Our Antibody
By Evony V. dela Cruz

LA
BU
OF
ON
ISI

Bayanihan is a Filipino custom derived from the word "bayan" which means
IV

nation, town or community. A Filipino community spirit and cooperation where group of
individuals extends a helping hand without expecting anything in return. It is
characterized by communal work towards one goal exemplified in carrying nipa house
SD

or pushing a passenger jeepney.

On March 26, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte, signed the law Bayanihan To
Heal As One Act (RA 11469), which is valid for the three months unless extended by
OL

Congress. It gives him the power to adopt temporary emergency measures to respond
to the COVID-19 national health crisis.

The salient features of the law are: (1) it provides medical response treatment
HO

for COVID-19 patients, as well as benefits for health workers on top of their usual
hazard pay; (2) it mandates aid to poor households by giving emergency subsidy
amounting five thousand pesos (P5,000.00) to eight thousand pesos (P8,000.00); (3)
it ensures a mandatory 30-day grace period for all loans and residential rent dues
without incurring any interest and fees; and, (4) it supports some measures against
SC

COVID-19 by directing the operation of any privately-owned hospitals and medical

facilities, regulating and limiting the operation of all sectors of transportation through
land, sea, or air, whether private or public.

6
COVID-19 has greatly affected nations worldwide, including the Philippines.
This pandemic brought fear, panic, and anxiety in our nation due to rapidly increasing
numbers of patients. Many are just staying inside their houses and following the safety

N
instructions that were given by the government. Unfortunately, there are some people
who do not have enough resources to consume in their everyday living. The reason

CA
that the spirit of bayanihan dominated in the hearts of Filipino citizens. The willingness
to help those who are in need prevails. Many Filipinos lend their helping hands to those
in needs by giving them relief goods and cash assistance. More so, most of these
people involved in bayanihan expressed their gratitude towards the "frontliners" –

LA
healthcare workers, uniformed personnel of the Republic, government employees
belonging to the national agencies and the local government units, suppliers of
essential goods and services, and others – by providing them food packs and giving
them enough resources such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

BU
OF
ON
ISI

Even though the researchers have not found the cure yet, the trend of bayanihan
IV

among the people will surely mitigate the spread of virus.

We cannot say when will this pandemic end, but one thing is for sure – amidst
SD

this crisis we are facing today, this instilled custom will be our best antibody.

Read the sentences below and underline the subject of each sentence.
OL

Subject A

1. This pandemic brought fear, panic, and anxiety in our nation.

HO

2. The president signed the Bayanihan To Heal As One Act (RA 11469).

1. Food packs were distributed by Local Government Unit.

2. People were instructed by the authority to stay at home.

Answer the following questions:

Which among the two sentences have subjects which are doers of the

N
action?
______________________________________________________________

CA
Which among the two sentences have subject which are receiver of the
action?
________________________________________________________

LA
What Is It

BU
The Voice of verb tells whether the subject of the sentence performs or receives
the action. In English, there are two voices: active and passive.
The sentence is in active voice when the subject performs of the action.

OF
Active:
President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law.
Subject Verb Object
ON
In this sample sentence, it is in the active voice since President Rodrigo Duterte
is the subject and at the same time the doer/performer of the action. It is the subject
because it can be found before the verb and it is the topic of the sentence.
ISI

To make it simpler for you to determine if the sentence is in the active voice,
locate the verb. If the subject is also the doer or performer of action. Hence it is in the
active voice.
IV

Meanwhile, when the subject is the receiver of the action, the verb is said to be
SD

in the passive voice.

Passive:
The law was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.
OL

Subject Verb Agent

As you may have noticed in the sample above, the arrangement of the elements
of the sentence was changed. In here, the law is the subject since it is found before
HO

the verb and is the topic of the sentence. Aside from being the subject, it is also the
receiver of the action since it is to whom, to where, or to what the action was done.
Hence, the sentence is in the passive voice.
SC

You must remember that active and passive voices are used depending on the
intention of the author. Using passive and active voices improperly may lead to
miscommunication.

8
We use active voice…
a. to express direct action

N
b. to achieve clear, concise, and interesting writing

We use passive voice…

CA
a. when the doer is unknown
b. when we want to focus attention on the person or thing being

LA
affected by an action
c. particularly helpful when describing a specific process

BU
In the passive sentence, we use by when we want to say who or what did the action.

Example:
We are encouraged by our teachers.

OF
The patients are being treated by doctors.

Take note that the passive is formed using be (is, am, are, was, were, has been,
have been, will be, etc) + the past participle of the verb.
ON
Active: The students attend flag raising ceremony every Monday.
Passive: The flag raising ceremony every Monday is attended by the students.

Notice that in the example given above, the verb “attend” which used in the active
ISI

voice was changed to “is attended” following the formula be +past participle. Keep in
mind that the success of converting active to passive voice lies on the correct use of
IV

past participles.

Active: People are wearing masks.

SD

Passive: Masks are being worn by the people.

You may have already realized that in the example above the verb “are wearing” was
changed into “are being worn” retaining the tense (present, past, future, continuous)
OL

of the verb while only altering its form (past participle).

To change a sentence in active voice to passive voice:

HO

➢ Make the object of the active sentence into the subject of the passive
sentence.
➢ Use the verb "to be" (is, am, are, was, were, has been, have been, will be,
etc.) in the same tense as the main verb of the active sentence.
SC

➢ Use the past participle of the main verb of the active sentence.

9
Let us apply the conventions in converting sentences in active voice to passive voice:

First, identify if the sentence is active or passive. Read the sentence below.

N
Active:

CA
Many people donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Subject Verb Object

LA
The object of the active sentence (PPE) becomes the subject in the passive sentence.
If the agent of the action (the person who performs the action) is mentioned, it follows
by.

BU
Passive:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was donated by many people.

OF
Subject Verb Agent

Although both sentences have the same basic components, their structure makes
them different from each other.
ON
To change passive voice sentence to an active voice sentence:
➢ Identify the subject of the sentence.
➢ Make the agent of the sentence as the subject and turn the old subject into
the object.
ISI

Look closely at the sample sentence.

IV

Passive:

The prayer is being led by my students.

SD

Subject Verb Agent

The agent in this sentence is my students, and the subject is the prayer. To change
this into active voice, the subject becomes my students and the object becomes the
OL

prayer. Observe that the verb also changed. Take note also of the agreement of the
subject to the verb.
HO

Active:
My students are leading the prayer.
