Our Simple Past

IV

by Sahra Jane P. Hoper

SD

I ________(turn) a page backward as I want to remember some of the

memories from the past. I remember how we ________ (eat) from our favorite
restaurant as we dine together to celebrate our victories. As we ________ (ride) in
OL

the jeepney and ________(see) students loudly talking about their achievements in
school and experiences with their teachers. Ooops! I also remember how we
HO

________(hug) our friends whenever we saw them as if we never had the time to
see one another. They ________(be) all on my memories that I really what to do
again but I ________ (realize) it was not really bad that something had happened
SC

because we ________(learn) to appreciate small things that we never recognized

before. In conclusion, we should cherish all the moments even the smallest one for
us not to regret anything that may become our simple past.

4
You are indeed correct if you have the following answers:
 turn- turned

N
 eat- ate
 ride- rode

CA
 see- saw
 hug- hugged

LA
 be- were
 realize-realized

BU
learn- learned

Read the passage for the second time with the correct past tense of the verb.

Yes, you are right! We use simple past tense to talk something that happened

OF
in the past. There are two kinds of verb in the simple past- they are regular and
irregular verbs. Some of the regular verbs found in the passage are turned, hugged,
learned and realized. As you notice, they all end in –ed. Remember that regular
N
verbs form their simple past by adding –d or –ed. However, ate, rode, saw, and
SIO

were are examples of irregular verbs. Irregular verbs change its spelling or remain
the same.
Now, I think you are ready to move forward and learn past perfect tenses of
I

the verb.

Past and Past Perfect Tenses of the Verb

SD
OL

Past and Past Perfect Tenses

HO

Simple past tense of the verb is used when something happened in the past.
On the other hand, we used Past Perfect Tense to show something happened
before another action in the past. It does not matter which event is mentioned first-
SC

the tense makes it clear which one happened first. Let us put it in this way for better
understanding:

6
o Past Perfect Tense refers to the action that happened first or earlier.
o Simple Past Tense refers to the action that happened second or later.

N
Observe the following examples:

CA
1. Past: Kristal ate fruits and vegetables. (*ate signifies that there is
something that happened in the past)

Past Perfect: Kristal ate fruits and vegetables as soon as she had read the

LA
articles about boosting immune system. (*had read signifies that there was
an action happened before Kristal ate fruits and vegetables.)

BU
2. Past: We bought washable face masks. (*bought signifies that it was a
past action)

OF
Past Perfect: When we bought washable face masks, the price had
increased. (*had increased signifies that it happened first before they
bought washable face masks.)
N
To form past perfect, you simply use the past tense “had” and add it to the
SIO

past participle of the verb. (had + past participle)

Here are the examples of some verbs change into past perfect:
1. register
I

had + registered = had registered

IV

2. learn
had + learned = had learned
SD

3. receive
had + receive = had received
4. leave
OL

had + left = had left

HO

Let us use the above formed past perfect tenses of the verb in sentences.

1. Local Government Units had registered the SAP beneficiaries before they
gave the money.
SC

2. After the students had learned their lessons in the module, they thanked their
teacher.

7
3. Isabel felt relieved as soon as she had received negative result from the
rapid test.

N
4. The bus had left by the time they got the desired number of passengers.

CA
Take note of these!

When using past and past perfect tenses of the verb in sentences, you

LA
should remember the following time expressions:
 Use after, as soon as, the moment that, until, because before using

BU
past perfect simple.

Examples:
1. As soon as the classes had stopped, Marie began to practice at home.

OF
2. The poor student earned money until he had learned to use his talent.
3. After the students had joined the group chat, the teacher collected
information.
N
SIO

 Use before, when, by the time before the simple past.

Examples:
1. Before I thanked the volunteer, she had run out the door.
2. Ghelene had helped Chelsea to do the task when she asked her.
I
IV

3. The students had enrolled online by the time the teacher sent the link.
SD

Read these:

 It would be helpful if you will remember the time expressions because

they signal where you will put the simple past and past perfect tenses
OL

of the verb in sentences.

 The past perfect tense has negative and formed using not
HO

(*had+not+past participle) and may also use with “already” and “just” to
refer to an event that was only a short time earlier than before now.
Examples:
SC

1. After he had not gone out, I kept on asking about him.

2. The teacher had already checked the information by the time Candice gave it.
3. The alcohol products had just sold when Rico saw it.
