P R ON OUNS
What is a pronoun?
A pronoun is a word we use when speaking about a person, and it is one way in which we gender
people. For example:

“She is a Police Officer

“I study at the Police Academy!”
“Are you from Buenos Aires?”

Since some pronouns are gendered (“she/her” and “he/him”), it is important to be intentional about
the way we use pronouns as we all work to create as inclusive an environment as possible. “They”,
for instance, is a gender-neutral pronoun.

People often assume the gender of others by their appearance and use pronouns to match their
assumption (which is not always correct). It’s important to ask for pronouns because you cannot
assume someone’s gender based on clothing, makeup, body size or shape, body hair, jewelry, etc.

Pronoun Etiquette Tips

Create opportunities for people to share their pronouns with you rather than assuming you know
their pronouns based on their appearance. For example, when introducing yourself share your
pronouns like this:
In one-on-one conversation: “Hi, I’m Pablo and I go by he/him. Nice to meet you.”
In a meeting: “Hi everyone. I’m Paula. I’m a cadet and I go by she/her.”
In your e-mail signature next to your name: E. Martínez (pronouns: they/them/theirs)

If you don’t know someone’s pronouns, it’s okay to ask. You can say:
“What pronouns do you use?”
“What pronouns do you go by?”
“What pronouns would you like me to use when I refer to you?”

If you make a mistake, apologize and move on. Help others by gently correcting them if they
misgender someone.

A student at Salamanca School tells us what she likes about her Spanish course:
“My name’s Samantha Adams and I’m a student at Salamanca School, a language school in
northwestern Spain. I’m English, from Newcastle, but my mother is French. She’s a teacher in London.
The students at Salamanca school are from many different countries. I’m in a class with students

The director of the school is Spanish, but my teacher is Argentinian. She’s from Buenos Aires and her

1 Read Tania’s description. Is it similar to your morning?

My morning
Every day, I get up at six a.m.
First, I make a black coffee and I
read emails. Then, I have
breakfast and listen to the
radio. I usually have cereal and
coffee but I sometimes have a
piece of toast and one egg.
After that, I often read the news
online. Finally, at 8.30 I go to

RIGHT NOW AT THE ACADEMY
NOTES
Read the text and look at the pictures. What is going on at the Academy?
When is it happening?

It’s 10 o’clock in the morning. First-year cadets are taking notes in their classrooms. The
professor is giving a lesson on Procedural Law, one of the most important subjects for a police
officer.
At the moment, second-year cadets are training. Some of them are practicing different self-
defense techniques with the instructors while others are standing in formation.
The Forensic Science professor and some third-year cadets are investigating traces of a made
up crime scene. They have a microscope and they are analyzing a cigarette, some hair and a
stained handkerchief.
Not very far from there, the firefighters are getting familiar with the components of a real fire
truck and the communications specialists are learning to use state-of the-art equipment.
