Fake Name; Tommy Shelby
This person’s definition of Marketing is; The process of developing, communicating, and delivering goods to
consumers in order to meet their needs and desires. The purpose of a marketing philosophy is to identify those
needs and fulfil them.
What do you think Tommy is a 20-year-old student studying IT at Swinburne University of Technology.

early retirement. He is smart but lazy and don’t take anything too seriously. Because
of that, he failed an elective subject in IT major and have to re-enroll another subject
(MKT10007) to make up for his credit.
Although Tommy doesn’t have any prior experience in the field of marketing, he still
comes up with an excellent answer of what marketing is, thanks to his superior
intelligent and quick wits. His answer is no doubt of his own, and not from any other
online source.

Part 3. Synthesis
My definition of marketing: Marketing is a business activity that involves advertising and providing products
and services to the customers in order to satisfy their needs, desires, and to make profit in the process.
How I draw to this conclusion: From all of the sources that I read and heard, marketing includes gathering
information, advertising, selling, and delivering products to consumers, of which I believe have all been
mentioned in my definition. However, the sources didn’t mentioned anything specifically about profit. I think it
is important to include profit in the definition because profit is the main goal, the final outcome that every
successful marketing campaign should have.
The definition of Cambridge Dictionary contributed most to my definition as it is short, concise and formal.
The definition of marketing of Investopedia is way longer than it should be, I think that definitions should be
made as concise as possible so that the readers can quickly identify what they are without having to read too
much. As from the people that I interviewed personally, I prefer Chi’s definition. I find her definition sufficient,
easy to understand, all without being lengthy. Tom’s definition is also good, very professional and detailed, a

bit long but still manageable. Shido’s response lacks detail and does not fully identify the definition, but still
catches some of the main ideas. In conclusion, professional in the field or not, most people tend to have a good
general idea of what marketing is, so it is safe to say that all of them contributed to my definition.
