- From 1885 to 1886, Louis de Wecker's clinic is where Rizal served as an assistant.

Rizal initially studied the eye under Louis de Wecker, a well-known French
ophthalmologist. De Wecker was a prolific author and active teacher despite having
no academic status. He was the first to introduce ophthalmoscopy and advanced eye
surgery to France. The de Wecker iris scissors are still in use today. From November
1885 to February 1886, Rizal worked as an assistant at de Wecker's clinic. He wrote
frequent letters to his family, such as this one from 1886, in which he describes what
he was studying in Paris. Every day, between 50 and 100 patients visit Wecker's
clinic; on certain days., they execute as many as ten significant surgeries. Many cross-
eyes have been corrected. A young woman tall, very tall, at least one palm taller than
myself, very elegant, lovely, with a poor white eye that couldn't see, got there a few
days ago. Wecker needed to blacken her eye, which was not difficult because it
merely took time. She couldn't complain about the discomfort because it was a nice
procedure, so she smiled. Rizal admired de Wecker's surgical abilities and thought his
surgical training was going well.

 Rizal’s another profession was being an Inventor. He invented a cigarette lighter in 1887
while practicing medicine in Calamba.
- While practicing medicine in Calamba in 1887, he devised a cigarette lighter, which
he gave to Blumentritt as a gift and named "sulpukan." It is made out of wood and
operates on the compressed air principle. Dr. Jose Rizal also invented the country's
first wooden brick-making machine. He devised a machine that could produce 6000
bricks each day.

 Rizal was also a businessman. During 1893, in partnership with Ramon Carreon, he
started a business.
- Ramon Carreon is the business partner of Jose Rizal in fishing, copra, and hemp
industries during May 14, 1893. In a letter to Hidalgo dated January 19, 1893, he
expressed his idea to improve Dapitan's fishing industry. At that time, fishermen were
only able to catch small fish using primitive fishing methods. So, Rizal asked Hidalgo
to assist him in purchasing a large net for trawl fishing (pukutan) and to send him two
good Calamba fisherman that could train the Dapitan people better fishing techniques.
The hemp industry is the most profitable business venture of Rizal in Dapitan. He
sold 150 bales of hemp to a foreign corporation in Manila, making a profit of P3 per
picul. He bought hemp in Dapitan for 7 and 4 reales per picul and sold it in Manila
for P10 and 4 reales.
