Chapter I
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Plastic utensils can take anywhere from twenty to one thousand (20-1000) years to

decompose. It is one of the major problems not only in schools but within the world. It is

made of potentially toxic and hard-to-recycle polystyrene, which is not very friendly to the

environment. Ninety-one (91) percent of plastic waste does not get recycled and with only a

few being incinerated, most of these plastic wastes remain in form or another and may remain

for hundreds or thousands of years. While most of the plastics produced now inhibits our

ocean, a recent study by the National Geographic states that a mammoth eighteen (18) billion

pounds (9 million tons) of plastic waste flows into the ocean every year (Parker, Fast Facts

About Plastic Pollution, 2018). These inedible and harmful substances are then being

consumed by the marine life, who, are then being consumed by people around the world.

Thus, eventually the plastics are entering our bodies as micro plastics. Some researchers also

point out that plastics contain harmful substances called carcinogens such as bisphenol A

(BPA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which may be linked to cancer (Breastcancer.org,

2019). This encourages the researchers to formulate an edible spork (spoon and fork) that will

meet the demand and to provide an alternative of single use plastics.

Significance of Study

Knowing the environmental benefits of this study is vital for it aims to help students

and teachers by adding health benefits like prevention of hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and

etc. In terms of environmental factors, it can lessen plastic cutlery usage in the community

that can de-escalate synthetic wastes. Lastly, the result f the study will provide information

for interested investors on investing in the production of edible spork.

Scope and Limitations

This experimental study is limited only on the acceptability of edible spork especially

in color, odor, texture and appearance. This study will be seeking the implication of the

following; identify determining factors of demand for edible cutlery, to compare the

characteristics of different treatment and to identify which treatment is most acceptable.

Primarily, the treatment is 2 flour:1oats:1:blue ternate extract, then the second regimen 4

flour:2 oats:1 blue ternate extract:1 malunggay leaves, furthermore the third analysis is 20

flour:10 oats:5 blue ternate extract:3 honey, finally, the last ratio 4 flour:2 oats:1 blue ternate

extract 1:malunggay leaves:1 honey .

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Clitoria ternatea (Blue Ternate)

The butterfly pea (C. ternatea) is a deep-rooted, tall slender, climbing legume with

five leaflets and a deep blue flower. It is well adapted to a variety of soil types (pH 5.5-8.9)

including calcareous soils. It is surviving in both the extended rainfall regions and prolonged

periods of drought. Propagation is through seed; the plants may be grown with support crops

(or) staked with bamboo to facilitate hand picking of the pods. Butterfly pea produce a large

amount of seeds and will readily self-seed, when the dry pod shatter. The seeds are normally

sown from the beginning until the middle of the wet season. Competes fairly well with weeds

once established; some weed control can be achieved by mowing the crop, as the successive

regrowth of the legume will gradually dominate the weeds. If a pure stand is required

cultivation or hand-weeding will be required during early growth. Use of pre-emergence

herbicide (Spinnaker at 200-400 ml/ha) two (2) to eight (8) weeks prior to sowing is essential

to achieve successful control of weeds during establishment (Conway et al., 2001).

Moringa oleifera (Malunggay)

Moringa oleifera , a plant from the family Moringaceae is a major crop in Asia and

Africa. MO has been studied for its health properties, attributed to the numerous bioactive

components, including vitamins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, isothiocyanates, tannins and

saponins, which are present in significant amounts in various components of the plant.

Moringa Oleifera leaves are the most widely studied and they have shown to be beneficial in

several chronic conditions, including hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, diabetes,

insulin resistance, non-alcoholic liver disease, cancer and overall inflammation. In this

review, we present information on the beneficial results that have been reported on the

prevention and alleviation of these chronic conditions in various animal models and in cell

studies. (Vergara-Jimenez et al., 2017)

GC-MS analysis showed that there are 9-octadecenoic acid (20.89%), L-(+)- ascorbic

acid- 2,6-dihexadecanoate(19.66%), 14 – methyl -8-Hexadecenal (8.11%) , 4- hydroxyl-4-

methyl-2-pentanone (7.01%), 3- ethyl-2, 4-dimethyl-pentane (6.14%), phytol (4.25%) ,

octadeamethyl-cyclononasiloxane (1.23%), 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid ( 2.46%), 3, 4-

epoxy- ethanone comprising (1.78%), N-(-1-methylethyllidene)-benzene ethanamine

(1.54%), 4, 8, 12, 16- tetramethylheptadecan-4-olide (2.77%), 3-5- bis (1, 1-dimethylethyl)-

phenol (2.55%), 1- hexadecanol (1.23%), 3, 7, 11, 15- tetramethyl-2 hexadecene-1ol (1.17%),

hexadecanoic acid (2.03%) and 1, 2, 3-propanetriyl ester-9 octadecenoic acid (1.23%) as the

chemical composition in the leaf extract and oleic acid (84%) L-(+)- ascorbic acid- 2, 6-

dihexadecanoate (9.80%), 9-octadecenoic acid (1.88%), methyl esterhexadecanoic acid

(1.31%) and 9- octadecenamide (0.78) are the chemical components in the seed extract.

The study also revealed that 9-octadecenoic acid (20.89%) constitutes the major of the

leaf extract while oleic acid (84%) is the major component of the seed extract. GC-MS

analysis showed the presence of many chemical constituents of Moringa oleifera leaves and

seeds locally grown in Abakaliki, Nigeria. The presence of various bioactive compounds

confirms the application of Moringa oleifera for various ailments by traditional practitioners.

Plastics

It is an invention that has seen more than half a century of innovation, provided smart

practical solutions that paved the way for an industry, which has made since 1950, a total of

ninety point two (9.2) billion tons till date (Parker, Plastic or Planet?, 2018). It has become an

integral part of our lives and is found everywhere. An industry with a global market value of

US$ 611.9 billion in 2017 (The Business Research Company, 2018), plastics are found in the

clothes we wear, the houses where we reside, the toys children play with, the vehicles we use

for travelling, in our computers and televisions, to the shopping bags and cutleries.

United States for instance, consumes annually forty (40) billion plastic cutleries

(Munir, 2016), while India throws away one hundred twenty (120) billion pieces of plastic

cutleries every year (Reddy, 2016). The global demand is six hundred forty (640) billion per

year and the global plastic cutlery market was worth US$ 2.62 billion in the year 2017,

according to the data published by the Digital Journal, and expected to reach around US$ 3

billion by 2025 (Digital Journal, 2019).

According to the aforementioned statistics, ninety-one (91) percent of plastic waste

does not get recycled and with only a few being incinerated, most of these plastic wastes

remain in form or another and may remain for hundreds or thousands of years. While most of

the plastics produced now inhibits our ocean, a recent study by the National Geographic
