In today world airline is the most important sector of the aviation industry. Airlines are concerned
with the commercial flight operation. These flights are scheduled or non-scheduled. Airlines are
the most important part of the economy. Airlines provide the services of transportation of
passenger and cargo. All airlines fall under civil operation along with general aviation. Airlines
get more attention because they generate most of the income for aviation sector. Also state is
depending on civil operation for generation of revenue. Moreover, these airlines have the most
unique growth rate because the rate of passenger is increases day by day so as the income. This
sector also provides job opportunity to the private sector.

International flights are also performed by the airlines which are very useful in bringing good
relation with foreign countries. Import and export of goods is also looked after by the airlines.
These airlines also charge handsome amount for the services they provide. Tourism is also
promoted by the airlines and welcome tourist with both hands. This sector of the aviation has
grown in paste 2 decades a lot more than other two sectors and also expected to grow more in the
upcoming years.

In airline operations, do you believe that more pilots on the flight deck result in
improved safety? Why has the industry shifted from crews of four or five pilots
to only two pilots (Captain and First Officer)? Is it possible that technology may
evolve such that only a single pilot is required for airline operations? Explain
your thoughts?

ANSWER

No, more pilots do not enhance the safety of the flight deck because more crew member was
required in the earlier past when equipment on board was not up to dated. Technological
advancement has introduced computerized system which works on special software and are
very easy to understand. More number of pilots were required because most of the work which
is performed by computer software’s now a days was performed by humans.

As the technological advancement has occurred, aviation industry also evolved. Aircraft
structure has changed a lot. Best technology, software, equipment’s are available on board
which has reduced the need of 4 to 5 pilots to only 2 pilots. Automation is one of these
advancement which enables the aircraft to fly on its own. Also cabin is only allowing to pilot
accommodation. More people cause congestion which effects the safety of flight operation.

In some cases, single pilot can also operate small aircraft like Cesena. Also more people can
cause more human error like lack of concentration, leaving task on each other, everyone tries
to be the leader. Less pilots will make less error, more task focused and this has been observed
in the past accidents has decreased in the past years.
