CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Semantics is a branch of linguistics that is in charge of studying the meaning of words, how
they started, how they developed, and why there have been changes in meaning in the history of
language (Mulyono in Suwandi, 2008:9). The word semantics is agreed upon as a term for the
field of linguistics that discusses and studies meaning or meaning. The term meaning is a
confusing word and term. For example, take the sentence The thief entered the house last night.
Various questions arise, for example, What is the name of the thief? Is it male or female? Did the
thief use a gun? What time did the thief enter the house? Likewise with the words: enter, home,
last night. That is, what is meant by the words: enter, home, last night? For example, did you
enter through a door or a window? Whose house did you enter? If the sentence the thief entered
the house last night, we heard from our friend who is currently talking to us, of course we can
ask things related to the meaning of the words used so that we understand the whole meaning of
the sentence. That is why it is said that the term meaning is a confusing term.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
In general, it is divided into seven categories of meaning, of which five are recognized as
associative meanings. Conceptual meanings, thematic meanings, associative meanings,
collocative meaning, style meaning, emotive meaning, and reflected meaning are the seven
different sorts of meanings. The notion of associative meaning is ambiguous and subject to
variations based on individual experiences (Leech, 1974: 21). Expressions' associated meaning is
influenced by the speaker's particular mental framework. Five subtypes can be distinguished
between them, including connotative, style, emotive, reflected, and collocative meaning.
