1. Sample mean and population mean

The general steps of testing hypothesis must be followed.

Ho: Sample mean=Population mean.

Degrees of freedom = n – 1

Problem 1

The following data represents sugar level of 10 patients in mg/dL values before meals.

70 85 96 60 55
110 75 65 67 92

Is the mean value for patients significantly differ from the mean value of general population
mean of 60 mg/dL . Evaluate the role of chance.

Sample Mean: x̄ = ( Σ xi ) / n Given: n=10

Solution:

x̄ = ( Σ xi ) / n
= 70 + 85 + 96 + 60 + 55 + 110 + 75 + 65 + 67 + 92
10
= 775/10
x̄ = 77.5

SOLUTION:
Standard Deviation:
= √2906.5
(10 - 1)

= √2906.5
9
Given:
x̄ = 77.5 n=10

x x̄ x- x̄ (x- x̄)^2
70 77.5 -7.5 56.25
85 77.5 7.5 56.25
96 77.5 18.5 342.25
60 77.5 -17.5 306.25
55 77.5 -22.5 506.25
110 77.5 32.5 1,056.25
75 77.5 -2.5 6.25 SOLUTION:
65 77.5 -12.5 156.25
t= 77.5 – 92
67 77.5 -14.5 210.25
17.97064
92 77.5 14.5 210.25
√10
TOTAL 2,906.5
= -14.5 .
Then compare with tabulated value, for 9 df, and 5% level 5.682815341
of significance. It is = 2.262
t= -2.551552203 or -2.552
The calculated value>tabulated value.

Reject Ho and conclude that there is a statistically

significant difference
2. Two independent samples

The following data represents weight in Kg for 10 males and 12 females.

Males:
82 78 90 57 69
70 87 79 100 65
Females:
67 78 51 89 105 60
87 65 74 60 88 99

Is there a statistically significant difference between the mean weight of males and females. Let
alpha = 0.01

To solve it follow the steps and use this equation.

x̄ = ( Σ xi ) / n x̄ = ( Σ xi ) / n
= 82 + 78 + 90 + 57 + 69 + 70 + 87 + 79 + 100 + 65 = 67 + 78 + 51 + 89 + 105 + 60 + 87 + 65 + 74 + 60 + 88 + 89
10 12
= 777/10 = 913/12
x̄ = 77.7 x̄ = 76.08

s2 = Σ (xi- x̄ )2 / n-1
= (82-77.7)2 + (78-77.7)2 + (90-77.7)2 + (57-77.7)2 +( 69-77.7)2 + (70-77.7)2 + (87-77.7)2 + (79-77.7)2 + (100-77.7)2 + (65-77.7)2
10-1
s2 = 164.46
s2 = Σ (xi- x̄ )2 / n-1
= (67-76.08)2 + (78-76.08)2 + (51-76.08)2 + (89-76.08)2 + (105-76.08)2 + (60-76.08)2 + (87-76.08)2 + (65-76.08)2 + (74-76.08)2 + (60-76.08)2 + (88-76.08)2 + (89-76.08)2
12-1
s2 = 253.72

t= 77.7 – 76.08 / √(10-1)164.46 + (12-1) 253.72 / 10 + 12-2 (1/10 + 1/12)

t= 0.259

Results:

Mean1=77.7 Mean2=76.08
Variance1=164.46 Variance2=253.72
Df = n1+n2-2=20
t = 0.259

The tabulated t, 2 sides, for alpha 0.002 is 3.552

Then accept Ho and conclude that there is no significant difference between the 2 means. This
difference may be due to chance.

P>0.002

3. One sample in two occasions

Mention steps of testing hypothesis.

The df here = n – 1.

Example: Blood pressure of 8 patients, before & after treatment

BP before BP after d d2
110 150 -40 1600
290 165 125 15,625
220 130 90 8,100
240 195 45 2,025
190 180 10 100
180 130 50 2,500
200 140 60 3,600
115 130 -15 225
Mean d=325/8=40.625 ∑d=325 ∑d =33,775
2
sd= √33,775-3252/8/8-1

sd= 54.21

t= 325/54.21/√8

t= 2.12

Results and conclusion

 t= 2.12
 Tabulated t (df7), with level of significance 0.02, two tails, = 2.998
 We accept Ho and conclude that there is no significant difference between BP
readings before and after treatment.
