CRUCIBLES

A small clay cup made of a material that can withstand extreme temperatures. They are used

for heating substances and come with lids.

DESSICATOR

· Used to remove moisture from substances or glassware

BEAKER

Used to hold varying volumes of liquid

· The spout lines up nicely with the rim of other glassware for easy pouring

TEST TUBE

· Used to hold and mix small samples

· Stirred by tapping the bottom with two fingers

· Fit into both a centrifuge and test tube rack

PIPETTE

· Used for measuring specific volumes

VOLUMETRIC FLASK

· Measures one specific volume, marked by the etched line on the neck.

· Easy to mix solutions, as they have glass stoppers and are designed to be inverted multiple

times to mix. Size of glass stopper needed is listed on the bottle. Be sure to hold glass stopper

while inverting.
FILTER PAPAER

A filter paper is a semi-permeable sheet of paper used in chemistry labs to separate solid

impurities or components from a liquid solution. They are often made of cellulose whose

capillary function comes in handy while separating fine solid impurities.

WEIGHING SCALE

A balance is used to weigh chemicals. The chemicals are always in some form of container and

never placed directly on the balance. It is important not to move a balance because they have

been calibrated for the exact position they are in. Some balances have plastic housing with

small doors to keep air currents from affecting the measurement. Close these doors whenever

the balance is in use.

FUNNEL

· Used to aide in the transfer of liquids

BURET

· Often used for titrations or dispensing specific volumes of liquids

· White plastic stop cock is open when parallel with the instrument and closed when

perpendicular

IRON STAND

· Used in conjunction with clamps to hold equipment that cannot stand up on its own

UTILITY CLAMP

· Used to hold other glassware onto a ring stand

GLASS STIRRING ROD

· Used to stir things that are often contained in beakers

ERLENMEYER FLASK

· Designed for easy stirring, can be swirled by hand without spilling

· Often used for titrations

PIPET BULB

· Used on the end of a pipet to aspirate liquid up into the pipet

OVEN

A laboratory oven is used for high-volume thermal convection applications. This laboratory

equipment provides uniform temperature throughout the chamber necessary for annealing,

drying, sterilizing, and other industrial lab functions.
