LABORATORY
INSTRUMENTS
Alan Moran Cahuana
RING SUPPORTS AND
THEIR COMPONENTS

 to provide a place to place a beaker

SPATULA

 Spatulas are used to transfer solid chemicals.

Chemicals should never be transferred with
your bare hands.
STIRRING ROD

The stirring rod is used to:

a) manually shake the solutions;
b) assist in pouring liquids; and
c) transfer a single drop of solution.
FLINT LIGHTER /
FIRING PIN

 These racks are used to light laboratory

burners
TEST TUBES

 Test tubes are used to mix chemicals and

also for heating chemicals. Only heat test
tubes that are Pyrex or Kimax.
RUBBER STOPPERS

 Rubber stoppers are used to seal a reaction

vessel, which could be a flask or a test tube.
Stoppers can also be used to force gaseous
reaction products to flow to a specific
location.
TEST TUBE
BRUSHES

They are used to clean test tubes and cylinders.

Forcing a large brush into a small test tube will
often break the tube.
TEST TUBE HOLDER

 A test tube holder is useful for holding a test

tube that is too hot.
WASH BOTTLE

 Wash bottles are used to rinse solids from

other equipment when trying to preserve
(keep all) the solid, for example from inside
a test tube.
PESTLE MORTAR

 Mortar is used to grind solids into fine

powders to speed up the mixing or reaction
process.
WATCH GLASS

 A watch glass is used to hold a small

amount of solid, such as the product of a
reaction. It can also be used as a cover for a
dish or beaker.
WEIGHING BOAT

 Weighing cans are used to weigh the solids

that will be transferred to another container.
Never put chemicals directly on the balance
as it leaves residue and can damage the
balance and contaminate the chemicals.
BEAKER

 Beakers contain solids or liquids. Very low

precision, should only be used to estimate
volume
BEAKER CLAMPS

 The beaker clamps are used to move beakers

containing hot liquids.
BUNSEN LIGHTER

 Bunsen burners are used to heat non-volatile

solids and liquids.
ANALYTICAL
BALANCE

 It is used to weigh solid compounds. Never

place chemicals directly on the balance, use
a weighing plate or paper.
CRUCIBLE AND LID

 Crucibles are used to heat certain solids,

particularly metals, to very high
temperatures
CRUCIBLE TONGS

 To handle hot crucibles; also used to collect

other hot objects
ERLENMEYER
FLASK

 Erlenmeyer flasks contain solids or liquids

that can release gases during a reaction or
are likely to splatter if shaken or heated.
EVAPORATOR
PLATE

 The evaporator plate is used to heat stable

solid compounds and elements, as well as to
evaporate non-volatile solutions.
DISTILLATION
FLASK

It is used to mix chemicals.

TWEEZERS

 Tweezers are used to hold or lift small

objects.
FUNNEL

 A funnel is used to aid in the transfer of

liquids from one container to another
GRADUATED
CYLINDER

 A graduated cylinder is used to measure

more precisely volumes of liquids
BURETTE

 A burette is used to measure volumes of

liquids very accurately and to dispense small
measurable amounts of liquids.
PIPETTE

 A pipette is used to dispense volumes of

liquids with great precision.
PIPETTE WITH
GLASS DROPPER

 A dropper pipet is used to transfer a small

volume of liquid, usually one drop at a time.
TUBE STEM
TRIANGLE (CLAY)

 The triangle on the tube stem is used as a

support for crucibles when heated over a
laboratory burner.
REACTION PLATES

 Reaction plates (or multi-well plates) are

used when we want to run many small-scale
reactions at once.
THE MUSIC STANDS
AND THEIR
COMPONENTS

 Lecterns are a safe and convenient way to

perform reactions that require heating using
a laboratory burner.
