Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

In your elementary level, you have learned the different elements of music and
how it helps in creating melodious songs. You may recall these elements as
rhythm, tempo, meter, dynamics, melody, texture, and timbre. These elements are
also present in the vocal music of the lowlands of Luzon. Vocal music is performed
through singing with or without an accompaniment or instrument.

In this lesson, you are going to learn the different folk songs of Luzon
(lowlands) and their characteristics.

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

the lowlands of Luzon after listening (MU7LU-Ia-1);
2. analyzes the musical elements of some Lowland vocal and
instrumental music selections; (MU7LU-Ia-2);

Before proceeding to our lesson, let us first recall some of the different
musical elements that you have discussed in your previous grade.
1. Rhythm - it serves as the pulse of the musical
composition beat
tempo-speed of the beat (fast, moderate or slow)
meter -composes of time signature is the combination of strong (accent)
and weak beats
- duple meter or 2, triple meter or 3, quadruple meter or 4

2. Dynamics - the loudness and softness of

music 2
LU_Q1_MAPEH7_Module1
3. Melody - the main tune of the song
4. Harmony - the simultaneous sounding of two or more notes

5. Texture - the thickness of

sound Monophonic
Polyphonic
Homophoni
c
6. Timbre - the quality of sound heard or the tone color.
Now that we have refreshed your memory about the musical elements, we can
use this knowledge later in describing the different folk songs of the lowlands of
Luzon.
What are folk songs? Folk songs are songs written by the folk and are sung to
accompany daily activities, livelihood, and putting the baby to sleep.

Characteristics of folk songs:

A. The lyrics are according to the native tongue.

Because songs are based on the daily experiences of the people in a particular
place and the message of the songs needs to be understood easily to be
appreciated, the lyrics of the songs are written and sung in their own language.

B. Passed down through oral tradition to family hence, learned by

memorization
Singing is a form of social bonding among early Filipino families. Because they
did not have access to internet, T.V. and radio during that time, singing folk songs
and teaching them to their kids became their bonding time.

C. Unknown composers and lyricists

Most composers of Filipino folk songs are unknown because songs are just
based on daily experiences and are passed down orally

D. Simple key signature of the song

It is easy for children to learn the tune a folk song because of the simplicity of
its melody and most of the time it is in Major keys (C,G etc.)

E. Duple, triple, or quadruple are common meters used

These meters were very common during that time. The dances and
common songs are based on these meters.

F. Primarily based on the community’s culture, tradition, and

livelihood G. Short and simple
Folk songs are easy to remember and memorize because it has few and
short lines or lyrics

Discover
Physical fitness is the ability of the body to do day-to-day activities
without undue fatigue, and still has time to do leisure activities and meet emergencies.

Physical fitness is divided into two components, health-related and skill-

related components.

Health-Related Components Skill-Related Components

1. Body Composition 1. Speed
2. Cardio-Vascular Endurance 2. Agility

13
LU_Q1_MAPEH7_Module1
3. Flexibility 3. Power
4. Muscular Strength 4. Coordination
5. Muscular Endurance 5. Flexibility
6. Reaction time

I. Health-related components focus on factors that promote optimum health

and prevent the onset of disease and problems associated with inactivity.

Body Composition is the proportion of fat and non-fat

mass in your body. A healthy body composition is one that
includes a lower percentage of body fat and a higher
percentage of non-fat mass, which includes muscle,
bones, and organs.

without becoming overly tired.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental or intellectual, emotional,

social, moral-spiritual and environmental well-being. It is not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity.
Health is the most important factor in our life. Live healthy in order to have a
happy life. As they say health is wealth. Health is important than having a million
dollars in your bank account. Your health is more than enough for you to be
considered a millionaire.
As an adolescent, you must be responsible with what you should be eating and
doing. Your health must be your priority. Being healthy means dealing with what
we are doing daily without getting tired easily and suffering from undue fatigue.

Lets’ read and learn the dimensions of holistic health.

A. Physical Health
- It refers to the well-being of an individual. It
means that you can do your daily task without getting
tired and undue fatigued.
Example: Dora performs simple physical exercises every

day to keep herself healthy.

B. Mental or Intellectual Health

-It refers to the ability of an individual to think and
improve his quality skills in life. It is the ability to
rationalize things.
Example: Go out and make new friends, keep yourself
Picture 2 busy with school activities.
www.freeiconspng.com Example: Find good reason in your failures. Think that
everything happened for a good reason.
C. Emotional Health
- It is the ability to accept failures, cope with your
environment and consider the feeling of others or
understanding and liking oneself.
Example: If a family member has left to work in
other place, you can easily accept the reality of being

away from your love ones.

Example: Self-love means finding peace and resting
comfortably in our own home.

D. Social Health
-It is how well you build relationship with your
community, and how you interact with the people that
surround you. Social acceptance means to interact with
different types of people, accept and understand
different norms and values.
Picture 4 Example: As a teenager you easily mingle and
www.freeiconspng.com develop friendship with the neighborhood.
Example: Be who you are and be like what is dictated
by your values and norms. It is the fact that most people
act in order to be accepted by any group and be like them.

E. Moral-Spiritual Health
-It refers to one’s faith, belief and values, know the
meanings and purposes in life.
Example: Respect everybody’s faith; it is looking
deeply within oneself and belief.

F. Environmental Health
- Understand the effect of the air, the water, and the
land that surrounds our health. Recognize the impact of
environment and man-made hazards.
Example: Observe proper waste disposal to avoid
Picture 6
contamination of our environment.
www.freeiconspng.com

Examples: Remember the five R’s of waste management:

• Refuse- It includes garbage and rubbish. Garbage is mostly decomposable
food waste. Rubbish is mostly dry material such as glass, paper, cloth, or
wood.
• Reduce – It is to help cut down the amount of waste we throw away.
• Reuse –It is learning to reuse items or re-purpose them like old jars and
pots into ornaments and shipping containers and created them into home
and offices.
• Repurpose- It refers to the process by which an object with one use value is
transformed or redeployed as an object with an alternative use value.
• Recycle- It is to use recycled paper for printing, handicraft or ornaments.
