(PERBANDINGAN)
Before we learn about degree of comparison, you need to know about
adjective. Adjectives are words that describe noun. The examples are
big, small, beautiful, clean, delicious, diligent, strong, weak, expensive,
cheap, good, bad, long, short, hard, soft, thick, fast, slow, large, old,
young, important, etc.
(Sebelum kita mempelajari degree of comparison, kalian perlu mengetahui tentang adjective (kata sifat).
Adjective (kata sifat) adalah kata yang mendeskripsikan kata benda. Contohnya adalah besar, kecil, cantik,
bersih, lezat, rajin, kuat, lemah, mahal, murah, bagus, buruk, panjang, pendek, keras, lembut, tebal, cepat,
lambat, besar, tua, muda, penting, dll.)
1 syllable adjective (kata sifat dengan 1 suku kata): big, small, clean, strong, weak, cheap,
good, bad, long, short, hard, soft, thick, fast, slow, large, old, young, etc.
2 or more syllable adjective (kata sifat dengan 2 atau lebih suku kata): beautiful,
delicious, diligent, expensive, important, etc.
Comparison can be classified into three degrees.
They are:
Positive Comparative Superlative

Positive degree (sama … /se- …)
It is used to say that the two parts of a comparison are equal in some way.
(Perbandingan ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kedua hal yang dibandingkan adalah sama.)
as + adjective + as
Example:
• Rani is 15 years old. Defi is also 15 years old.
It means Rani is as old as Defi. (Rani setua Defi)
• My shoes is Rp. 900.000,- while your bag is also Rp. 900.000,-.
It means my shoes is as expensive as your bag. (Sepatuku semahal tasmu)
Comparative degree (lebih …)
It is used to compare the qualities of two persons or things.
(Perbandingan ini digunakan untuk membandingkan 2 orang/benda/hal)
for one syllable
adjective + er + than (untuk kata sifat dengan
satu suku kata)
Example:
• Vina is 17 years old. Rico is 23 years old.
It means Vina is younger than Rico. (Vina lebih muda daripada Rico)
It means Rico is older than Vina. (Rico lebih tua daripada Vina)
• Chicken Steak is Rp. 25.000,- while fried chicken is only Rp. 10.000,-.
It means fried chicken is cheaper than chicken steak. (Ayam goreng lebih murah daripada steak ayam)
for more than two
syllable
more + adjective + than (untuk kata sifat lebih
dari dua suku kata)
Example:
• Chicken Steak is Rp. 25.000,- while fried chicken is only Rp. 10.000,-.
It means chicken steak is more expensive than fried chicken. (Steak ayam lebih mahal daripada ayam goreng)
• The view of a mountain is more beautiful than the view of a city. (Pemandangan gunung lebih indah daripada
pemandangan kota)
Superlative degree (paling …/ ter- …)
It is used to compare the qualities among other people or things in a group.
(Perbandingan ini digunakan untuk membandingkan diantara banyak orang/benda/hal)
for one syllable
the + adjective + est (untuk kata sifat dengan
satu suku kata)
Example:
• Rafin is 16 years old. The students in Rafin’s class are 15 years old.
It means Rafin is the oldest among the students in his class. (Rafin adalah yang tertua diantara siswa-siswa di
kelasnya)
• Chicken Steak is Rp. 25.000,-, fried chicken is Rp. 10.000,-, and chicken noodle is Rp. 15.000,-.
It means fried chicken is the cheapest among the others. (Ayam goreng adalah yang paling murah diantara yang
lainnya)
for more than two
syllable
the + most + adjective (untuk kata sifat lebih
dari dua suku kata)
Example:
• Chicken Steak is Rp. 25.000,-, fried chicken is Rp. 10.000,-, and chicken noodle is Rp. 15.000,-.
It means chicken steak is the most expensive among the others. (Steak ayam adalah yang termahal diantara
yang lainnya)
• Raisa is the most beautiful singer in Indonesia. (Raisa adalah penyanyi yang paling cantik di Indonesia)
Task 3. Translate the following sentences into a
good Bahasa.
1. The iced tea is the cheapest among all beverages.
2. The BTS group is as famous as EXO group.
3. Getting information from a computer is easier than from
traditional file.
4. Ariana is the most intelligent student in the school.
5. The Petronas Tower is higher than the Taipei tower.
