DEGREES OF COMPARISON

Degrees of comparison are used when we compare two things or more by using an adjective or adverb.

But in this lesson we are going to compare only adjective and it’s called Adjective degrees of
comparison.

There are three (3) degrees of comparison in English.

 Positive Degree
 Comparative Degree
 Superlative Degree

Positive degree
In positive degree the quality of things that are compared is the same. ( Tingkat perbandingan yang
sama )

The common form of words used : As Adjective as

Example : Bagus as tall as Yogi ( Bagus sama tingginya dengan Yogi )

The radio as expensive as the bicycle ( Radio sama mahalnya dengan sepeda )

A cheetah is not as big as a cat ( cheetah tidak sama besarnya dengan kucing )

Comparative Degree
Comparative Degree is used to compare two people, animals, situation or things and one of things that
compare has different quality. ( Perbandingan sifat yang mana salah satu benda yang dibandingkan
mempunyai kualitas/tingkatan yang lebih )

There are two forms of comparative degree

1. Subject 1 + is + Adjective er + than Subject 2

Example : Ruler A is more longer than Ruler B ( Penggaris A lebih panjang dari penggaris B )

A bus is not faster than a train ( Bis tidak lebih cepat daripada kereta api )

2. Subject 1 + is + more Adjective + than + Subject 2

Example : Mira is more diligent than her brother ( Mira lebih rajin dari adiknya )
My bag is more expensive than my shoes ( Tas saya lebih mahal dari sepatu saya )
Superlative Degree

Superlative degree is used when we compare more than two people or things and showwhich is the
greatest among them all. ( perbandingan sifat yang mana sifat yang dibandingkan mempunyai kualitas
yang paling baik dari semuanya )

There are two forms of Superlative degree

1. Subject + is +the + Adjective est

Example : Anton is the tallest student in the class ( Anton murid yang paling tinggi dikelas )

Mirna is the youngest of all ( Mirna yang paling muda dari semuanya )

2. Subject + is + the + most adjective

Example : My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world ( ibu saya wanita paling cantik
Di dunia )
Tia is the most diligent student in my school ( Tia siswa yang paling rajin dikelas saya)
