Degrees of Comparison
Degrees of Comparison is a kind of a comparison used to compare something with
another thing or with the others using adjective and adverb to compare.
For example:
- adjectives: slow, beautiful, happy, etc.
- adverbs: slowly, beautifully, happily, etc

There are three kinds of Degrees of Comparison:


1. Positive Degree
2. Comparative Degree
3. Superlative Degree
1. Positive Degree

It is a comparison to compare one thing with


another in the same level.
(Pola pembandingan ini digunakan saat kita hendak
menunjukkan bahwa kedua benda/orang/grup
itu setara.)
The pattern (in positive sentence):
Subject + is/am/are + as adjective/adverb as + Subject

For examples:
▪ Dina is as beautiful as her sister.

(Dina itu sama cantiknya dengan saudara perempuannya.)


▪ Jack is as smart as Tony.
(Jack itu sama cerdasnya dengan Tony.)
The pattern (in negative sentence):
Subject + isn’t/am not/aren’t + as adjective/adverb as + Subject

For examples:
▪ The pen isn’t as black as that.

(Pulpen ini tidak sehitam pulpen itu.)


▪ This house isn't as big as my house.
(Rumah ini tidak sebesar rumah saya.)
2. Comparative Degree

It is to compare one thing with another thing


in the different level.
(Comparative degree adalah pembandingan
antara dua benda/orang/grup dengan maksud
melebihkan salah satunya.)
The pattern (in positive sentence):
Subject + is/am/are + adjective + -er + than + Subject/Object

The examples:
▪ Kimberly is taller than Tom.
(Kimberly lebih tinggi daripada Tom.)

▪ Today is colder than yesterday.


(Cuaca hari ini lebih dingin dibandingkan kemarin.)
The pattern (in positive sentence):
Subject + is/am/are + more + adjective + than + Subject/Object

The examples:
▪ Mr. Albert’s car is more expensive than Mr. William’s car.
(Mobil pak Albert lebih mahal daripada mobil pak William.)

▪ Gabriella is more beautiful than Sarah.


(Gabriella lebih cantik daripada Sarah.)
