EVALUATIONS AND COMPARISONS WITH ADJECTIVES AND NOUNS

Therefore, evaluation is an examination of something to measure its utility. Simply put, evaluation is a
systematic and objective process of measuring or observing someone or something, with an aim of
drawing conclusions, using criteria, usually governed by set standards or by making a comparison.

1. Evaluations with adjectives

Adjective is a word that shows the nature or condition or number of a noun so that adjective can also
be called an adjective.

Most adjectives that show nature, two quantitative adjectives (much and little) and two
adjectives of numbers (many and few), have a level of comparison or commonly called degree
comparison.

forming or giving an opinion of the amount, value or quality of something after thinking about it
carefully need to make some evaluative judgements of this relationship

1. Aparments aren´t big enough for families

2. Aparments are too small for pets
3. The kitchen isn’t big enough
4. The living room is too small

Use too before an adjective when making an evaulation:

1. This house is too small

When making an evaluation with an adjective using not enough, the adjective is usually

1. inserted between not and enough:

Comparison is a word used to multiply the properties of an object with the properties of other
objects, or to express two or more objects when compared.

1. Comparisons with adjective

Adjectives are used in the form of comparisons, that is, if we want to compare the nature of an object
with the nature of an object of another.

Comparison consists of three levels, including:

Positive degree (regular level), the form is fixed.

Comparative degree, the form is added -er.
Superlative degree, the form is added -est.

 Positive degree

Positive degree is used to compare two or more objects that have the same or equal properties.
It consists of two types, namely:

a) Positive Equivalent Comparison

Formula
Subject + to be + as + adjective + as + object

1. Chandra is as smart as his older brother.

2. Raisa is as beautiful as the moon.
3. You are as old as Dhani’s father.

b) Comparative Negative Equivalents

The subject formula + to be + not + as / so + adjective + as + object

1. Chandra is not so smart as his older brother.

2. Simon Santoso is not as strong as Lee Chong Wei.

 Comparative degree

Comparative degree is used to compare two or more things that are not equal. In other
words, one object has advantages over other objects. Just add the -er suffix behind the
adjective or add more in front of the adjective. Don't forget to use than before
mentioning the object (the second item).

The formula:

The subject + to be + adjective + -er + than + object

Subject + to be + more + adjective + than + object
Example :

1. Lee Chong Wei is stronger than Simon Santoso

2. Anas is more diligent than Lutfi.

For some situations, comparative degree does not use than. because the two objects
being compared are not written in one sentence.

Example:
1. Henry's car isn't very big. He wants a bigger car
2. I'm not very tall. My brother is taller.

 Superlative Degree

Superlative degree is used to compare two or more objects, where one object is the
most ... more than another object. Just add the -est suffix behind the adjective or add
the most in front of the adjective. Don't forget to add the before the adjective that
serves as a confirmation.

Example :
1. Sahrul is the tallest boy among us
2. Mr. Susilo was the oldest man in the meeting
3. The Taj Mahal is the most luxurious cemetery in the world
4. Cristiano Ronaldo is the most expensive football player in the world
