It is nothing but the elaborative study

of the usage of the adjectives.

There are three degrees:
Adjective comes in three degree forms
they are one
1. Positive
2. Comparative
3. Superlative
Example:

POSITIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

Clever Cleverer Cleverest
Tall Taller Tallest
Big Bigger Biggest
Small Smaller Smallest
Good Better Best
Bad Worse Worst
Beautiful More beautiful Most Beautiful
Intelligent More Intelligent Most Intelligent
In the above example we can inform
some of the adjectives end with the suffix
‘er’ and ‘est’.
Some of the adjectives entirely
pronounce in a different way
(i.e) Good – Better – Best
In the last examples ‘More and Most’
have been added before the adjectives has
prefixes.
Why the ‘er’ or ‘est’ could not be added as
suffixes for the adjectives beautiful, intelligent
if you add er, est comes as below

Beautiful – Beautifuller – Beautifullest

Both are incorrect
Intelligent – Intelligenter – Intelligentest
That why we add more and most
respectively
what is the reason?
When the word represents the adjectives
is more than two syllable we have to add
more and most.
When we try to add some quality or
quantity before a noun ordinarily we can
use just a positive adjectives.
Examples:
1. Kanimozhi is a beautiful girl
(Adjective)
2. Raju is a tall boy
(Adjective)
3. Mannargudi is a big town
(Adjective)
The above examples are very common
appraisal of a noun.
Positive usage
If you want to compare both elements
(things, persons, etc.,) as equal in status then
we must use the following frame.

Mala is as good as (good) Kala

If you want to compare two elements by

giving a slight different the following frame
is used.
Frame
‘Not so ____as’
Mala is not so good as Kala

Comparative Usage
To make comparative statement the
following frame has to be selected.
Frame
‘(____ than)’
Kala is better than Mala
(Comparative)

Sivaji Ganesan is better than any other actors

in the world. (Comparative)

River Ganges is bigger than any other rivers

in India. (Comparative)
Superlative Usage
To frame a sentence in superlative the
following frame has to be selected.
Frame 1:
‘The _____’
Examples
Sivaji Ganesan is the best actor in the
world. (Superlative)
River Ganges is the biggest river in India
(Superlative)
Frame 2:

Gemini Ganesan is one of the best actor in India.
(Superlative)

(positive)

(positive)

Note:
1. Positively compared statement by using
‘as__as’ frame could not be transferred in
another form.
2. Superlatively compared statement by
using ‘the__’ frame could be changed in
comparative as well as positive degree.
3. Superlatively formed statement by using
one of the frames could be changed in
comparative as well as positive degree.
