1.2 Control Functions

A list of ECU standard functions is provided as a reference.

Standard functions Description

Injection control Engine ECU can manage multiple injections, with fuel pressure up to
2000 bar, for the best compromise between performance and noise,
while remaining compliant with emission legislation.
CAN network Two CAN networks are available, the first one compliant with ISO 15765
(for diagnostic purposes), the second one compliant with J1939
standard (for interfacing with display or machine ECU)
User interface The ECU can manage a tachometer and 4 different lamps:
- Grid heater
- MIL (major engine malfunction)
- Check engine (minor engine malfunction)
- Water in fuel (sensor in the fuel filter)
Electric fan An electric fan (single speed, two speeds or variable speed) can be
operated by ECU, depending on coolant temperature.
Cold start An external grid heater on the intake duct can be mounted and be
managed by ECU, in order to start the engine at low temperatures. An
additional block heater is not managed by the engine ECU
Hour counter Total engine running time is calculated and kept into ECU memory,
making this data available to CAN network
Double track main accelerator The main accelerator can have two separate tracks (0-5 V) for safety
reasons.
Double track secondary accelerator A secondary accelerator can be fitted (max. of main and secondary
accelerator position is used).
It can have one or two separate tracks (0-5 V) for safety reasons;
second track requires final harness to operate properly.
PTO mode Up to 4 engine response maps (torque vs engine speed and accelerator
position) can be switched by the user according to the PTO switch 1 and
2 signals.
Example: drivability map up to 2600 rpm, operating map up to 2600
rpm, high idle at 1500 rpm, high idle at 2000 rpm.
Diagnosis Standard diagnosis (compliant with ISO 15765 standard) is
implemented in order to:
- clear errors (ClearDiagnosticInformation service);
- check errors (ReadDiagnosticTroubleCodes service);
- read parameters associated with errors (ReadFreezeFrameData);
- read instantaneous values (ReadDataByLocalIdentifier);
- write configuration parameters (WriteDataByLocalIdentifier)
- perform actions associated with engine diagnostic
(InputOutputControlByLocalIdentifier).
Fixed isochronous control The engine ECU can be programmed to work at fixed speed (no engine
drop), usually for genset applications. The engine speed can be set in 2
different ways:
- via CAN line (it is possible to choose the desired speed)
- with a potentiometer (it is possible to set maximum 5 different values)
Custom engine calibration It is possible to change:
- the max torque curve (only with values lower than the standard
calibration)
- the idle speed
- the maximum engine speed
Coolant temperature output Coolant temperature value is sent through a PWM signal to a gauge (or
a lamp) in the dashboard.
KDI 2504TCR 1903TCR Stage V ECU Application Manual v04 8
Variable isochronous control This function is similar to the fixed isochronous control, the differences
are:
- the customer or machine operator can switch between fixed or
variable speed,
- engine customer can choose the engine speed at its own production
line (for example choose between 1500 and 1800 rpm in a genset
application)
Clogged air filter An analog or digital air filter clogging sensor can be managed by the
ECU, transmitting status through CAN network, counting the total
number of hours run with high differential pressure.
Fuel level An analog or digital fuel level sensor can be managed by the ECU,
transmitting status through CAN network.
Hydraulic oil pressure An analog or digital hydraulic oil pressure sensor can be managed by
the ECU, transmitting status through CAN network.
Fuel inlet pressure An analog or digital fuel inlet pressure sensor can be managed by the
ECU, to perform fuel filter diagnosis.
Lift Pump This function allows to manage the lift pump by ECU

2.5 Requirements for injector line

Background: the power supply voltage drops if the resistance of injector line including power
supply line is big. And, as result, shortage of the injector driving current lead to the no engine
start.

It is recommended that the total wire harness resistance for the injectors circuits, should be
not more than 150 mΩ at 20 °C (150 mΩ > CR1 + WR1 + CR2 + CR3 + WR2 + CR4).
See Figure 3.

2.7 Requirements for power supply line
The wire harness of power line should meet the following requirements:

1. Maximum difference voltage should be less than 1.0 V for the following terminals:
- between each ECU GND terminal and vehicle GND (body GND and earth of battery)
- between each ECU GND terminal and GND of the other unit connected to ECU
- between power supply voltage (battery) and ECU +B.
2. Maximum difference voltage should be less than 0.7 for the following terminals:
- between ECU Power-GND terminal and other ECU GND terminals.
3. Cables sizing between starter motor and battery must be made as to have a minimum
voltage drop; ground cable must have the same cross sectional area of the cable
connected to battery “+” terminal.
Maximum length of cables is:

l = max cable length [m]

UN = battery nominal voltage [V]
IAK = start-up current (+20 °C and 50% battery charge) [A]
S = cable cross sectional area [mm2]
ΔV = allowable voltage droop = 4% of nominal voltage [V]
ρ = linear resistivity of copper = 0.0175 µΩ∙m

About the kind of battery required refer to the KOHLER Diesel KDI Installation manual.

2.8 Connection reference to vehicle connectors

- Power connection to ECU should be made according to the following schematic:

60 A for general fuse is only a suggestion, it should be selected depending on vehicle

wiring.
+BB means battery voltage
+B means battery voltage after main relay
Contact current (pin D7): Min 4.8 mA
Main relay maximum drive current (pin C9): 0.6 A
Main relay coil resistance: 27 Ω ÷ 2.5 kΩ
If a battery isolator switch is used, before disconnecting the battery it is necessary to
wait at least 30 seconds from key switching OFF (0 V at pin D7)

- Grid heater connection (required for starting the engine at low temperatures):

Grid heater maximum drive current (pin F12): 3 A

Grid heater coil resistance: 5.4 Ω ÷ 2.5 kΩ

- Alternator connection:

Minimum alternator excitation current (pin D8): 250 mA

If the LED has no internal resistor for current limitation, it is necessary to use an
additional resistor (serial connection to the LED).

- Coolant temperature PWM output can be used to drive a lamp, like in the following
schematic (*):

Or it can be used to drive a dashboard gauge (compatible with PWM output).

From the hardware point of view coolant temperature output is a 10 Hz PWM signal
(0÷12 V) with a maximum drive current of 0,03 A. According to the characteristic of
the instrumental panel, it has to be calibrated accordingly.

If the coolant temperature PWM output is not used, the customer must have an alarm
lamp that works when coolant temperature is higher than 102 °C. The coolant
temperature values are available on J1939 through the ET1 message (SPN 110).
Reference: 10.3.2.

- Oil pressure lamp connection (*):

Maximum drive current: 1 A

- Lift pump connection:

Lift pump relay maximum drive current: 2 A

Lift pump relay coil resistance: 16 Ω ÷ 2.5 kΩ

If the customer uses the lift pump supplied by Lombardini (p/n 6585.162.0), the
nominal operating current is 1.4A.
5A fuse should be used.

- Low speed electric fan connection:

Low speed electric fan relay maximum drive current: 2 A

Low speed electric fan relay coil resistance: 16 Ω ÷ 2.5 kΩ

KDI 2504TCR 1903TCR Stage V ECU Application Manual v04 23

- High speed electric fan connection:

High speed electric fan relay maximum drive current: 3 A

High speed electric fan relay coil resistance: 5.4 Ω ÷ 2.5 kΩ

- Variable speed electric fan connection:

In order to allow Kohler service to access diagnostic capabilities, it is required to use

an OBD connector (like one of the following DEUTSCH connectors):

HD 10-9-1939 PE HD 14-9-1939 PE

It uses 9 male terminals (p/n 1060-16-0677). It is possible to use a dust cap (p/n HDC
16-9).

- CAN 1 connection:

KDI 2504TCR 1903TCR Stage V ECU Application Manual v04 24

- CAN 2 connection:

Both CAN1 and CAN2 must have two termination resistors of 120 Ohms: the ECU
contains a termination resistor between the CAN H and CAN L wires for both CAN1
and CAN2 networks; the other termination resistors have to be provided by customer
as indicated by CAN specification (see following schematic).

- Main Accelerator 1 (track 1) connection (MA1):

- Main Accelerator 2 (track 2) connection (MA2):

KDI 2504TCR 1903TCR Stage V ECU Application Manual v04 25

An example of ratiometric output of main accelerator could be the following:

The signal coming out from the accelerator has to follow some requirements:
a) it has to have two tracks with independent power supply and linear trend;
b) it should never be under 0.2 V (or over 4.8 V) for diagnostic to work.

- Secondary Accelerator 1 (track 1) connection (SA1):

- Secondary Accelerator 2 (track 2) connection (SA2):

In normal operating conditions, the engine runs with a accelerator value chosen as
follows: MAX[MIN(MA1, MA2), MIN(SA1, SA2)]
If one of the four tracks accelerator falls in fault, the engine runs at idle condition.

following schematic:

The signal frequency depends on engine speed: 6 pulses per engine revolution.

(*) The values of the resistors in the schematics are reported as an example: it is
required to use resistors which allow to supply the LED with 12V. It is possible to use
a light bulb provided it complies with the maximum allowable current.

(*5) In order to improve the turbocharger lubrication, new software strategies have been introduced starting
from RC7.2 software version, particularly:
- Crank Injection Delay: when fuel temperature is less than or equal to -5 °C, ECU performs a
motoring for 2 seconds before starting injection.
- Pedal Input Delay: ECU performs torque and speed limitations for a time period depending on fuel
temperature (see the table below). During this time period (counting from beginning of cranking) the
engine has to run at idle condition.

The signals for inhibition and forced regeneration (both CAN message and hardwired switch)
can be managed in two ways (it depends on calibratable value):

- momentary signal
- solid state signal ****

Momentary signal: ECU recognizes the forced and inhibition regeneration signal looking at
the rising edge of the signals

Forced regeneration request

Inhibition regeneration request

Δt ≥ 3 sec in case of request performed with CM1 message

Δt ≥ 300 msec in case of request performed with hardwired switch

KDI 2504TCR 1903TCR Stage V ECU Application Manual v04 38

Solid state signal ****
ECU recognizes the forced and inhibition regeneration signal such as the value of signal
request

Forced regeneration request

Inhibition regeneration request

**** The solid state management is under development and it will be available starting from
June
