INTRODUCTION

• A lot of you might have already been acquainted


with the concepts of literacy, language and
education.
• They are connected areas but refer to different
things.

TRADITIONAL LITERACY

Traditional Literacy 1
 TL is the integration of listening, speaking, reading, writing and
critical thinking.
 It includes a cultural knowledge which enables a speaker,
reader, or writer to use language for appropriate social
situations.

Functional Literacy 2
 It refers to personal reflection on what textual and visual
environments are presuming.
 This type of literacy enables a person to contribute for
community development.

Emergent/Early Literacy 3
 Is defined as behaviors shown by very young children as they
begin to respond to reading and writing acts.
 EL can be shown thru: pointing to and talking about the
pictures, turning the pages, and asking questions.

Basic Literacy and Skills 4
 Has been popularly defined as the ability to read, write and do
basic arithmetic.
 According to Barton (2006), basic literacy is used for the initial
learning of reading and writing which adults who have never
been to school need to go through.

Literacy Skills 5
These are the skills needed for reading and writing.
• Phonemic Awareness. The awareness of sounds and the ability to hear and
play the individual sounds of language.
• Awareness of Print. The ability of knowing the letter of the alphabet.
• Vocabulary. Showcases the skills of someone on understanding words.
• Spelling. The ability to arrange letters to make a word.
• Reading Comprehension. The ability to read and understand the meaning of
something.

▰ Language is the ability to both use and understand spoken
words or signs. It is all about passing of ideas from one person
to another.
▰ Whereas, literacy is the ability to use and understand written
words or symbols to communicate.
▰ Language and literacy are intertwined prenatally.

▰ Language and literacy are major domains of early childhood
development. These are connected areas but refer to different
things.
▰ Language development involves the development of the skills
used to communicate with others through languages, while
literacy development involves the ability to read and write.
