Remote Input/Output Modules

9 Programming
The remote discrete I/O modules must be used with CNC software at index J or above.
The remote analogue I/O modules must be used with CNC software at index MA or above.

9.1 Module Addressing

As is the case for the racks used in the PLC serial bus ring, it is necessary to define a geographical address for each
remote I/O module used.
The module address is specified by assigning it a rack number and a card number. It is set on the 7 address bits, A0
to A6:
- A0 to A3: for the card number (0 to $F)
- A4 to A6: for the rack number (4 to 5).
Address bits A6 and A5 are internally set to high and low logic levels respectively. This means that the address field
is limited to a maximum of 32 modules with a base address equal to $40. The first module has address $40 (rack 4,
board 0) and the last has address $5F (rack 5, board F).
The module address is thus set on address bits A0 to A4 using the five address switches at the rear of the module.

9.2 Input/Output Addresses
9.2.1 General
The inputs and outputs are defined with respect to the automatic control function:
- An input is a variable read by the automatic control function,
- An output is a variable written by the automatic control function.
The variables are addressed on four digits:
- %Ircmv for read variables,
- %Qrcmv for write variables.
r: rack number (4 to 5)
c: board number (0 to $F)
mv: channel number, internal address of the module (0 to $3F).
The variables can be expressed on:
- One bit: %Ircmv.x or %Qrcmv.x (with x varying from 0 to 7)
- One byte: %Ircmv.B or %Qrcmv.B
- One word: %Ircmv.W or %Qrcmv.W
- One long word: %Ircmv.L or %Qrcmv.L.

9.2.1.1 Format of Read Variables %Irc

Read variables %Irc are grouped in two parts:
- Module diagnostic part
- Module input image part.
The diagnostic variables are:
- %Irc3E.W: Identifier
- %Irc3C.W: Internal module status (available only on the 16I/16O module)
- %Irc3A.W: Dialogue error counter on the serial bus (see Ladder Language Programming Manual)
- %Irc39.B: Status of the serial bus link (0 = OK, see Ladder Language Programming Manual).

9.2.1.2 Format of Write Variables %Qrc

Write variables %Qrc are grouped in two parts:
- Module configuration part,
- Module output image part.
The configuration variables include:
- %Qrc3E.W: Module identifier expected in this location. It is recommended always to specify this word to ensure
consistency between the expected bus configuration and the real configuration
- %Qrc3D.B: This byte is used to assign the remote I/O module a logical address that is different from the physical
address set on the switches
- %Qrc3C.B: Module priority. This field refreshes the module inputs/outputs in phase with a given sequential task
- %Qrc3B.0: Assignment of the first output of a module to the watchdog function
- %Qrc3B.1: Part programme access to the module enabled
- %Qrc3B.2: This bit is used to automatically reset the outputs (%Qrc3B.2 = 1) or latch their status
(%Qrc3 B.2 = 0) after a serial bus error. The default value of %Qrc3B.2 is 0.
Remark All these variables must be programmed in task %INI.

9.3 Programming Recommendations
The recommendations below are given for guidance. They are aimed at increasing the application security. They must
be adapted where required to the features of the specific machine automatic control system.
The programming recommendations described below are to be carried out in task %INI.

9.3.1 Input/Output Configuration Test

This test is used to check conformity of the inputs and outputs (cards or modules) of an application.
For the remote I/O modules, this check is used to make sure the fibre-optic bus is operational, the modules are present
and on and have not been interchanged by mistake during maintenance.

Principle
The principle consists of declaring each card or remote I/O module present in the application by writing the value of
its identifier in variable %Qrc3E.W.
Example: %Q4A3E.W = 0x50FF
This declaration means that a 16 remote input module (identifier 0x50FF) must be present at address $4A.
At the end of the %INI task, the PLC monitor checks the declared configuration against the real configuration. Any
discrepancy between the two configurations results in:
- Inhibiting of the watchdog,
- Setting of the DEFCONF system bit (%R97F.1) indicating an input/output configuration error,
- Non-refreshing of the input/output data by the PLC.

9.3.2 Configuring the Output Fallback Status in Case of Error

This possibility concerns only the modules that have outputs. The fallback status applies to all the outputs of a module.
Remark Each module can be configured independently.
Principle
The fallback status of the module outputs is configured by setting variable %Qrc3B.2:
- %Qrc3B.2 = 0: The outputs remain latched in the state they were in just before occurrence of the fault
- %Qrc3B.2 = 1: The outputs are systematically reset by occurrence of a fault.
Example: %Q513B.2 = 1
When a fault occurs on the I/O bus, the outputs of the module at address $51 are all reset.
Reminder: A fault on the I/O bus is indicated by:
- Setting of the DEFBUS system bit (%R97F.0),
- Watchdog timeout..
Remark At power on, in the absence of programming, variable %Qrc3B.2 has a default
value of 0.

42 en-938954/1
Remote Input/Output Modules

9.3.3 Configuring the Watchdog

The watchdog is configured by assigning the first output (index 0) of a card or remote I/O module to the watchdog
function.

Principle
The watchdog is configured by setting variable %Qrc3B.0 to 1.
Example: %Q403B.0 = 1
The watchdog function is assigned to output 0 of the remote I/O module at address $40.
Remarks The watchdog function has priority over the fallback function.
To increase the application security, two outputs (wired in series) can be assigned
to the watchdog function. Each of these outputs must be the first (index 0) of a card
or remote I/O module.

Remote Input/Output Modules

Faults can be classified in the following categories:

- Power supply faults,
- Fault on the fibre-optic ring,
- Address fault,
- Input or output stage fault.

10.2 Power Supply Faults

To operate correctly, a remote I/O module requires presence of 24 VDC power supply for:
- The internal module logic (M,UM),
- The sensors wired to the inputs,
- The output stages.
The presence of each of these power supplies is indicated by a green LED.
Failure of the power supply of a module causes a break in the fibre-optic ring, a watchdog timeout and sets the general
link fault bit (DEFBUS %R97F.0).
Failure of the power supply of the sensors and/or the output stages is not detected or indicated by the PLC. It results
in malfunctioning of the automatic control system, since the state of the inputs and/or outputs is no longer
representative of reality.
Remark To enhance safety and availability of the automatic control system, it is
recommended to wire these voltages to inputs that can be continuously monitored
by the PLC programme.
10.3 Fibre-Optic Ring Fault
A break in the fibre-optic ring causing a loss of data frames is immediately detected by the PLC, causes a watchdog
timeout and sets the general link fault bit (DEFBUS %R97F.0).
The fibre-optic ring continuity fault can be located as follows:
- Search for the module on which the red BC LED is lit,
- On this module, check that:,
- The reception fibre-optic cable (marked Rx) is correctly connected,
- The fibre-optic cable connecting it to the previous module is not damaged,
- On the previous module, check that:
- It is correctly supplied,
- The transmission fibre-optic cable (marked Tx) is correctly connected,
- The output power setting switches are correctly set.

10.4 Address Fault

It is necessary to make sure that the addresses set on the remote I/O module effectively correspond to the addresses
of the I/O variables used in the PLC programme.
When two I/O modules have the same address, the general link fault bit (DEFBUS %R97F.0) is set and a watchdog
timeout occurs.

10.5 Input or Output Stage Fault

A fault on an input or output stage is not detected and results in malfunctioning of the automatic control system.
On the 16-input/16-output static I/O module, each shorted output is indicated by a red LED and a status word %Irc3C.W
(1 bit per group of 8 outputs).
