GOLDEN RULES FOR READING BLANKS

1. Singular Noun: V1 with s/es

Example: John eats chocolates.

2. Plural Noun: V1 without s/es

Example: Students eat chocolates.

3. IS/AM/ARE/WAS/WERE: V1 + ING (ACTIVE VOICE) Subject comes first

Example: John is eating chocolates.

4. IS/AM/ARE/WAS/WERE: V3 (PASSIVE VOICE) Object comes first

Example: Chocolate is eaten by John.

5. HAS/HAVE/HAD: V3

Example: John has eaten chocolates.

6. HAS BEEN/HAVE BEEN/HAD BEEN: V1 + ING (ACTIVE VOICE) Subject comes first

Example: John has been eating chocolates since morning. (Present or Past Perfect Continuous Tense)

7. HAS BEEN/HAVE BEEN/HAD BEEN: V3 (PASSIVE VOICE) Object comes first

Example: Chocolates have been eaten by John. (Passive of Present Perfect Tense)

8. Modals: CAN/COULD/WOULD/SHOULD/MAY/MIGHT/MUST/WILL/SHALL: V1 without s/es whether


noun is singular or plural

Example: John should eat breakfast.


Example: Students should eat breakfast.

9. CAN BE/COULD BE/SHALL BE/WILL BE/ SHOULD BE/MAY BE/ MIGHT BE: V1 + ING ( ACTIVE VOICE)
V3 (PASSIVE VOICE)

Example: John might be eating chocolates.


Example: Chocolates might be eaten by John.

10. ARTICLES: A, AN, THE

A: a Singular countable noun, a table one table, a chair one chair, a water wrong because water is not a
countable noun.

AN: Vowel (a, e, I, o, u)

THE: The is used to indicate something that has been talked about earlier.

Example: I have a book. The book is interesting.

Superlative Degree: Always use ‘THE’ before superlative degree.

11. TO: V1 without s/es

Example: He wants to go to market.


Example: They want to go market.

12. PREPOSITION: OF/FOR/BY/IN/AT/INTO/FROM/WHILE/TOWARDS: V1+ING

Example: I AM FOND OF EATING CHOCOLATES.


Example: I AM PREPARING FOR CLEARING PTE EXAM.
Example: I GAIN KNOWLEDGE BY STUDYING BOOKS.
