THE USE OF PROJECT LAPIS (Learning Activities for Pupils towards Improvement of Comprehension Skills): A Teacher-made Activity Sheets for
Improving the Comprehension Skills of Selected Grade 5 Pupils of Bagumbayan Elementary School for School Year 2022-2023
Proposed Research Title

Reading comprehension has been a major issue for more than 20 years. Researchers have found that teaching reading strategies are important to
developing increased student comprehension. Teachers can help improve student comprehension through the instruction of reading strategies. Predicting,
making connections, visualizing, inferring, questioning, and summarizing are strategies shown by research to improve reading comprehension (Block &
Context and Israel, 2005). It is important to teach the strategies by naming the strategy and how it should be used, modeling through the think-aloud process, group
Rationale practice, partner practice, and independent use of the strategy (Duke & Pearson, 2005).
(Must be data- Based on the result of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) for S.Y. 2019-2020, twenty percent of Grade 5 pupils were found to

the gap/s indicated) during this transition period from normal to new normal where pupils will have their home-based schooling under the modified modular distance
learning which will be implemented in the Division of Navotas City.
Therefore to ensure that the reading comprehension skills of the pupils will not be neglected even though on modular distance learning, the researcher
thought of this project. The researchers have seen children experience difficulty with the process of reading comprehension. In modified modular
distance learning, how could a child even start answering the modules if he struggles from deriving meaning from the text that he reads?
The area of focus of this research is to improve the comprehension skills of selected Grade 5 pupils of Bagumbayan Elementary School. Specifically, it

The project objectives were to improve the reading comprehension of Grade 5 pupils using activity sheets designed using the six
comprehension strategies: predicting, making connections, visualizing, inferring, questioning, and summarizing. The teacher
PROPOSED researchers will introduce one comprehension strategy at a time during the Kumustahan in English. Activity Sheets will be given based

The students will independently use the journal to record the comprehension strategy they used, and how it helped give meaning to the
text. Post-test will be given after the implementation of the project to assess how the pupils’ reading comprehension has improved.

observe which reading comprehension strategies pupils used. Journals will also be collected once a month.

Results of this research will be shared and disseminated with other Grade 5 Reading Teachers of the Division of Navotas City to ensure that Grade 5
Plans for pupils will improve their reading comprehension skills even in home-based schooling. Results of this study will also serve as the basis for further and
Dissemination and future studies on how teachers can improve the reading comprehension skills of Grade 5 pupils.
