Health class
I. The 3 areas of health in The Blind Side:
 The first area of health I will discuss is the social aspect. Social health refers to the way
you or others can see others in a social aspect. In the movie, we see that Michael doesn’t
have many friends and usually stays alone. He tends to stay quiet, and this makes others
annoyed or weirded out. The teachers don’t even try to help him; they see him as a lost
cost. Until one-day S.J. the son of Leigh Anna and Sean Tuohy starts talking to him. This
greatly surprised him as no one at the school has talked to him. And after getting adopted
by the Tuohy, Michael starts to come out of his u shell, makes many friends, and even
joins the football team thanks to the couch and Sean his dad. The teachers also started
talking to Michael about how they can help him pass the class. And at the end of the
movie, Michael has come to his own. He became social and happy to talk to others. The
evolution he went thru just shows how a little effort can change everything.

 The second area of health I will discuss is the mental or emotional aspect. Mental health
refers to the way our mind acts in certain situations and how we feel. In the movie, we
can see Michael has a lot of trauma from being separated from his mom. This causes him
to lash out in the form of just leaving. Michael tends to not be confrontational, so when
he’s mad or unhappy, he just walks away. An example of this is when he runs away from
every foster home he has had. When Michael starts to attend school, he feels scared and
indifferent. He doesn’t do his test and just sits thru class waiting for the day to end. And
after that, he goes to a laundry mat to do his laundry with other people due to not having
money. Later in the movie, Michael starts to stay with the Tuohy and feels like a burden.
Leigh Anne makes sure that he knows that’s not true. And to solidify this the family ends
up adopting him and making him a Tuohy. At the end of the movie, Michael goes from
being sad and indifferent to happy. He also learned to control his emotions more making
him a better version of himself.
 The thread and final area of health is the physical aspect. Physical health refers to the
way we treat our bodies and how healthy our bodies are. The movie doesn’t go into
Michael’s health all that much. But from what we can see he is tall and on the overweight
side. And in the movie, we see him put his dirty laundry in with another person due to
him having no money. This can be seen as super unhygienic the reason being that you’re
sharing the germ with the person and vice versa. And as Michael doesn’t have a home,
we can assume he doesn’t take baths or use hygiene products. But after moving and being
adopted by the Tuohy, he starts implementing hygienic practices. Then later in the movie
we see, him joining football which helps him physically dy giving him an activity to do.
And at the end we see Michael being physically healthy by doing a sport and doing
hygienic practices.

II. Answer this question in 1 paragraph of 6 sentences

1) What is Michael Oher's life like at the beginning of the film?
Michael’s life at the beginning of the film is tragic. At a very young age he was separated
from his mom this had a very long-lasting effect. This traumatic event caused him to
view change as a bad thing. It also doesn’t help that his homeless and doesn’t know
where to go after school. He also shows to be very quiet and doesn’t talk to others. The
clothes he wears tend to be worn down and old.

2) According to what we could see in the movie, what is Michael Oher's emotional area
like?
Michael’s emotional area is super in denial. Like many people who have gone through a
traumatic event, they tend to block the emotions they feel which causes them to lash out.
As we see in the film Michael lashes out at anyone that wants to him away from anyone,
he loves due to the trauma he had as a kid. Another form of lashing out he does is running
away from foster families that take him. He does this because he doesn’t see himself as
part of the family. This causes him to feel out of place and like he doesn’t belong
anywhere.
3) How is the arrival of Michael Oher to the Tuohy Family marked in the Movie?
At first, it was seen as temporary. So, most of the family didn’t see the need to include
him a lot. But as time passes, we see that the family starts to include him in a lot of their
events. Also seen in the film is the mom seeing how well the family is compared to
Michael. As we see the mom go to the part of town Michael is from and see how
dangerous it is even though is in the same town. We also see her confront her friends for
being insensitive to Michael’s problems.

4) How does Michael Oher work with his emotions?

He learns to deal with his emotions dy first, talking and communicating, and secondly by
finding something to do. When the film starts Michael doesn’t talk much and just stays
quiet what this does is make him feel unseen and unimportant. But as the movie goes on,
we see him start to express himself and show more of himself. And when it comes to
sport, in Michael’s case football. Scientific studies have shown that kids and teens that do
a sport or activity they like, increase emotional management. In Michael’s case, it allows
him to express his emotions with no one getting hurt.

5) How is the social and emotional environment marked in the life of Collins with the
arrival of Michael to the family?
When Michael first joins the family, he still sees himself as an outsider. But as time goes
on the mom, dad, and S.J. start to include him as a family member. Everyone except Lily
Collins, at the beginning we could tell from watching the film that she felt a bit uneasy
with Michael’s presents. But in school, we see that Collins’ friends make fun of Michael.
As Collins sees this, she starts to include Michael as part of the family. And after that, she
starts to feel easier with Michael around and starts seeing him as a brother
6) ? How is racism marked in the movie?
the Blind Side follows a lot of problems one of them being racism. Racism in the movie
can be seen in how everyone acts when Michaels is around. Everyone tends to just avoid
him and try not to speak to him. This is due to him looking intimidating and unfriendly.
Another example of racism in the film is when the mom is with her friend, and she starts
to talk about the environment that Michael came from. Her friends start to make jokes.

7) Identify a mental disorder that the film presents us with. Why did you choose the
disorder? (Explain it)
The mental disorder that I think the movie presents is PTSD and Anxiety. PTSD (post-
traumatic stress disorder) is a mental disorder that affects Michael thanks to his
childhood. After he and his mom were separated this had long-lasting mental effects.
Which manifests in him having anxiety. Anxiety is the constant feeling of fear and or
nervousness. And in the film, we can see multiple examples of him getting an anxiety
attack like when he got in the car crash with S.J.

8) Identify an emotion that marked you according to the film, why did you choose the
emotion? (explain)
An emotion that marked me is the feeling of sympathy. Sympathy is when u feel bad or
sad for someone else. When I watched the film, I keep getting the feeling of how I have it
way better than other people and that I should always be grateful. In the film, Michael’s
life was not an easy one, yet he still tried. But when something doesn’t go my way, I tend
to get mad and or give up. And is not just Michael a lot of people in this world tend to
have it worse making me feel sympathetic because the only thing I can do is make sure to
take every opportunity I’m given because others won’t get them.

9) Describe Michael's social area before he entered the Tuohy family.

Michael’s social area in the film before he meets the Tuohy family is tragic. He tends to
be unsocial and not talk to anyone. This ends up leading people to make fun of him. It
also doesn’t help that he has no family to turn to for help. So he just ends up living day
by day.
10) Describe Michael’s social area in the Tuohy family.
After joining to Tuohy family Michael’s social area changes drastically. First, everyone
at school isn’t afraid of him anymore. People in school see that he is just a normal kid.
And thanks to S.J. Michael was able to make a lot of friends. This doesn’t include the fact
that he started football making him more popular in school. And finally, he now has a
family letting Michael express himself with them.

11) Describe the three areas of Michael's health and how it is marked at school.
First, let’s talk about Michael’s social health in school, at the end of the film is well.
People ended up learning that they can’t judge someone without knowing them.
Secondly, let’s talk about his mental health, in the film we start with Michael feeling sad
and like a burden. But at the end of the movie, he learns to manage his emotions and how
to express them. Finally, is his physical health, in the film, Michael is shown to be on the
overweight side. But at the end of the film, he starts to play football, giving him a proper
outlet to have physical activity.

III. You are going to carry out an essay on the topic of your preference, relating to the
area of health that the film presents to you. (5 paragraph 5 sentence)

In the film, only 2 of the 3 areas of health are shown. Being the social and emotional
areas. The social area refers to how people see you and each other. And the emotional
area refers to how you handle problems in your daily living. In the movie, we can see
Michael had a complete change in his health areas, and in this essay, we are going to
1explore these areas of health.

The first one we are going to explore is the social area. At the start of the film, Michael is
shown to have a bad social life. People in the school are afraid of him making him feel
out of place. But only one person made him feel like he belongs, S.J. the son of the
Touhy family. He would always talk to Michael and was never afraid of him.
Not only were the students annoyed at Michael but the teachers too. When Michael's
started at school the teachers were having a hard time helping him. Michael would not
talk, and this made it hard for the teachers to see if he understood the material. But after
joining the Touhy family. He learns how to talk to others and open up. And after that, he
was having an easier time making friends and expressing himself.

The second area we are going to talk about is emotional. At the start of the movie, we can
see that Michael is emotionally unstable. He tends to laches out and does not know how
to deal with his emotions. This is due to his childhood, when he was young, he got
separated from his mom. And he was placed in foster care leading him to feel unwanted
and neglected.

But after he joined the Touhy family, he learned to control and express his emotions and
actions dy not letting them get the best of him. In conclusion, Michael learns to be a
better person by controlling his emotions and by Improving his social life leading him to
be a better person.
