Objectives
(1) To determine the cause of deterioration in academic performance.

(2) Using information collected and illustrate on a Venn diagram (Nb- use correct mathematical
terms and concepts of set theory).

(3) Analyze the data and discuss the problems.

(4) Devise solutions to eliminate the problems.

Description
Presentation College Chaguanas has been a very prestigious educational institution since 1959. It
was the 1st college to win 5 president medals in a row and obtain many scholarships both open
and additional. However over the past 2 years, it has started to change. The students have started
to drop in academic performance.

For instance, there are a lot of bad end of term reports and a lot of assessments not being done
properly. In this report, I am here to investigate why students are not doing their best
academically and what factors that causes this. For example, bad time management, social
problems, family issues, poverty etc.

Methods of collecting data

(1) A small survey on the total amount of students in form 5 (100) was conducted.

(2) With aid from the form 5 dean, a class list from each form 5 class with their different end of
term and mid-term test marks were obtained.

(3) In groups of 20 students I asked the following questions:

a) How do you manage your time?

b) Is there any family problems?

c) Are those family problems causing you as a student to do badly in test?

d) Do your parents try to help you with your school, work?

e) Do you even ask for help?

f) Are you on social media too often?

g) Is it a reason why you do badly academically?

h) Do you think that you are more inclined to sport that you just don’t bother with your school
work?

Results

The results is shown by a Venn diagram.

Analysis
From the Venn diagram above, bad time management, social problems and family problems/ bad
parenting are the contributing 3 factors that accuse deterioration in academic performance. From
the survey of the 100 students in form 5, 12 students have no social problems, no family
problems; have good parenting and good time management. These 12 students are also doing
very well academically. The remaining 84 students are the ones who do not perform well
academically.

From the Venn diagram, 16 students have social problems, family problems/ bad parenting and
bad time management. 12 students only have social problems, 18 students only have bad time
management and 10 students only have family problems/bad parenting. 10 students have social
problems as well as bad time management. 9 students have bad time management as well as
family problems/bad parenting. 13 students have social problems as well as family problems/bad
parenting.

Discussion
In this report, bad time management, social problems and family problems/bad parenting are 3
contributing factors that cause bad academic performance in Presentation College Chaguanas.
Bad time management refers to not setting aside time to do schoolwork. A lot of students have
this problem, about 53 out of 100 in form 5. This can be due to students using too much time on
other activities example social media, playing too much video games or sport. Some students just
do not even care about doing well academically. During my investigation a lot of students have
said that are more inclined in sport than their schoolwork.

These 84 people also use social too much especially those who don’t even want to find out what
work they missed. Lastly these students may have family problems 53 in total. This would be
more the parents’ fault because they are depriving the child to study and thus he would fail.

Here are some solutions to these problems:

(1) The student must incorporate some time to do his schoolwork

(2) Limit the time spent on social media and sport
(3) If you need to use social media use it to get any work missed
(4) The student’s parents should ,meet with the teachers to see how the student is doing in his
school work.
(5) Parents should help their children with their schoolwork
(6) Parents should put their family problems aide and let their children be their #1 priority

Conclusion
Presentation College Chaguanas is a very good school however if the students don’t put their
mind to their academic performance they would not be successful in life.
