# Importance Of Investing Sports Among The Youth In Guyana Schools

For all of these reasons, I am especially proud of the role that I played in being
part of the leadership group for the
Guyana Secondary Schools Basketball Association (GSSBA) as we sought to implement
the Youth Development Sports Programme at
Guyanas high schools. While the main benefits of youth sports are enjoyment for
children, others include building stronger,
healthier bodies and personalities, developing team skills, and setting them up for
success in high school, college, or
professional sports. Given sports proven ability to engage, motivate, coach, and
keep young people engaged with programs, the
IDB is aggressively using sports to engage and keep these youth engaged in the
process of setting them up for a bright,
productive future.
Sports at schools have the potential to contribute to a desperately needed
generation of positive-minded young people among
the nations youth. Participation in after-school sports dramatically impacts
childrens educational, emotional, behavioral,
and physical outcomes--especially those of vulnerable, poverty-stricken young
people. According to the education minister,
soccer provides the most physical activity, and, as with any sport, also provides a
number of health benefits to children.
Meanwhile, Dr. George Norton noted that although the Guyana government is pushing
education as the primary agenda, the
government has recognized the importance of sports and its benefits in contributing
to a healthier, more well-rounded
society. Director of Sport, Mr. Christopher Jones, reiterated similar sentiments to
Minister Norton, and told children that
the Government of Guyana (Guyana) is serious about sports in Guyana, and that
Region One (Barima-Waini) would benefit. The
Minister went on to urge greater synergy between the Regional Governments and
Regional sports bodies.
He added that Guyanas Government must address the worsening physical conditions in
national schools, along with their sports
facilities. In its annual National Survey on PE, School Sports, and Physical
Activity, Youth Sports Trust examines which
schools are seeing a positive benefit from their sports and PE facilities. The
Vision of the primary PE and Sports Premium is
that, when children leave primary school, all pupils are physically literate,
possessing the knowledge, skills and motivation
needed to enable a healthy lifestyle and a lifelong commitment to physical activity
and sport. Going forward, Minister Norton
has observed that playing sports involves cooperative and collaborative attributes,
which will serve children well in their
futures at school and in life.
Dr Roupnaraine is a strong proponent of expanding after-school activities,
particularly advocating for the benefits that
sports and music have in developing minds and characters. The minister has made the
case for developing an industry that is
complementary, in order to enhance the economic benefits from sports. The
involvement of Guyanese athletes in international
sporting events has also reignited feelings of strong nationalism, stemming from an
understanding that they could root for
Guyana. Sports have also fostered racial tolerance and a breakdown in stereotypes;
challenges not new to Guyana.
